Real Madrid's Coaching Dilemma: Mourinho or Matarazzo?
Florentino Pérez is back in his element. A major decision is on the table at Real Madrid, and the president is quietly sifting through names, profiles and philosophies as he prepares to appoint the club’s next head coach.
Among the candidates, one name has caught the eye inside the Bernabéu: Pellegrino Matarazzo. The 48-year-old American has built a reputation in Spain for a clear, modern interpretation of the game, and his work has not gone unnoticed in the corridors of power in Madrid. His positional play, aggressive structure without the ball and ability to quickly impose an idea have made him a popular talking point among the Blancos’ hierarchy.
Yet admiration does not always lead to appointment.
Strong backing for Mourinho
Behind the scenes, the momentum points in a different direction. There is still powerful support within Real Madrid for José Mourinho to take charge again. According to Belgian transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri, the agreement for Mourinho’s return is already in place, with only the formalities and timing of the announcement left to resolve.
The club could go public as early as next week. If that timeline holds, the “Special One” will walk back into a club he once set ablaze with controversy, trophies and an unmistakable edge, this time under different conditions and a different generation of stars.
Mourinho’s current deal with Benfica runs until 2027 and includes a €3 million release clause. For Real Madrid, that figure is modest in the context of a coaching appointment of this magnitude. It is a lever Pérez can pull quickly once he decides the moment is right.
Matarazzo’s rise in San Sebastián
The growing respect for Matarazzo is no accident. When he arrived at Real Sociedad at the end of December 2025, the Basque side were drifting, struggling to match their ambitions on the pitch. The former VfB Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim coach did not need long to change the mood.
He tightened the structure, sharpened the team’s attacking patterns and restored confidence. Results followed. Real Sociedad climbed back towards the upper reaches of LaLiga, playing with conviction and clarity. The turnaround reached its peak in the Copa del Rey, where Matarazzo guided the club to glory and a long-awaited trophy.
That triumph has already guaranteed Sociedad a place in next season’s Europa League, even though they currently sit eighth in LaLiga. It is a season that began in uncertainty and now ends with silverware and European football secured.
Unlikely move, growing reputation
Those achievements have inevitably drawn attention, and Real Madrid’s interest underlines how quickly Matarazzo’s stock has risen. His contract with Real Sociedad, like Mourinho’s at Benfica, runs until 2027, giving the Basque club a strong hand and a sense of stability around their project.
For all the admiration, a move to Madrid at this stage is considered unlikely. The internal support for Mourinho, the modest cost of his release clause and the sense that a decision is already effectively made all point in one direction.
Matarazzo may not be the man stepping into the Bernabéu dugout this time. But his name is now firmly in the conversation at the very top level of European football. If Real Madrid are watching this closely, others will be too.
