NorthEast United Signs Rising Star Pramveer Singh

NorthEast United FC have pulled off one of the most eye-catching domestic moves of the upcoming ISL season, beating multiple rivals to the signature of highly rated India international defender Pramveer Singh.

The 18-year-old left-footed centre-back, out of contract after the 2025-26 campaign with Punjab FC, has agreed a three-year deal with the Highlanders, with paperwork set to be completed shortly. Several ISL clubs had pushed hard, but NorthEast United’s offer of a clear route to regular minutes proved decisive.

A source involved in the deal told Khel Now that three ISL teams were in for the teenager, yet playing time tipped the balance in favour of Guwahati. Bigger money was on the table elsewhere. The promise of a bigger role arrived from NorthEast.

For a club intent on rebuilding its identity, it is a bold, deliberate move.

A meteoric rise in India colours

Pramveer’s ascent has been rapid, even by the accelerated standards of modern Indian football.

Over the past three years, he has ticked off every rung of the national ladder: U-17, U-20, U-23, and now the senior team. Earlier this month, he made his India debut against Tajikistan, stepping into the Blue Tigers setup as the latest graduate of a swelling youth pipeline.

Those who have tracked his progress were not surprised. His composure has stood out at every level, and his relationship with NorthEast United assistant coach Naushad Moosa goes back to their time together with the India U-23 side. That familiarity matters. Moosa knows his strengths, his temperament, and the areas that still need sharpening.

India’s narrow failure to qualify for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup did little to dim his stock. Across that campaign, Pramveer’s calm presence and reading of the game strengthened his reputation as one of the most assured young defenders in the country.

From Punjab’s academy to ISL record-breaker

The first real glimpse of his potential came on a bigger stage at the 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup. From there, Punjab FC’s academy became his launchpad.

He impressed in the Indian Youth League, then became a cornerstone of Punjab’s Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) triumph in 2024, playing every minute of their title-winning run. That consistency forced the club’s hand. A promotion to the senior squad followed swiftly.

History arrived just as quickly. At 17 years and 189 days, Pramveer started against Mohun Bagan, becoming the youngest starter in ISL history. It was not a token outing. He looked like he belonged.

By the 2025-26 season, he had 13 appearances across competitions, chipping in with a goal and reinforcing the sense that this was a defender built for the long haul, not just a fleeting youth sensation.

Why NorthEast United moved first – and fast

Inside NorthEast United, the interest in Pramveer had been building for months. This was not an opportunistic swoop at the end of a contract. It was a targeted move for a player they view as a long-term pillar.

Under head coach Juan Pedro Benali, the club has doubled down on young Indian talent. The strategy is clear: identify high-ceiling prospects early, surround them with a staff that believes in development, and give them the one thing that accelerates growth more than any training drill – game time.

Benali’s reputation for improving youngsters is already well established in Indian football circles. NorthEast United’s hierarchy believe that in this environment, Pramveer’s curve can bend even sharper upwards.

For the player, the choice says as much about mindset as it does about career planning. He could have chased the biggest contract. Instead, he chose the clearest path to the pitch.

For an 18-year-old who has already worn India colours at every age-group level and broken an ISL record along the way, the next question is not whether he will play.

It is how quickly he can turn potential into dominance in the heart of NorthEast United’s defence.
