Marc Cucurella's Rapid Move to Real Madrid
Marc Cucurella didn’t so much choose Real Madrid as get swept up by it.
The Spain international has revealed that his move to the Bernabeu came together at breakneck speed, so quickly that any thought of weighing up alternatives barely stood a chance.
The left-back, who officially joined Real Madrid this summer, was one of the few specific reinforcements Jose Mourinho had requested for the new campaign. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had circled, watching his situation, but once Madrid stepped into the frame the contest effectively ended.
Speaking to El Mundo, Cucurella described negotiations that moved with rare urgency and clarity. There was no drawn-out saga, no weeks of speculation and brinkmanship.
“I think it all happened in a day and a half or two,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, it was much better that way – much quicker, with no headaches.”
The deal was sealed almost as soon as it began. The speed suited him. So did the destination.
“At the end of the day, playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say that, so I had no doubts whatsoever.
“I think both I and those around me – my family – were clear that this was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down, and I’m very happy with the decision we’ve made.”
From La Masia to the Bernabeu
Cucurella’s route to Madrid carries an extra twist. He grew up at La Masia, shaped in Barcelona’s academy before building his career away from the Camp Nou spotlight. That background naturally raised eyebrows when he chose the Catalan club’s fiercest rival.
He knows exactly what it looks like. He also knows what he wants.
“Life has different stages. In this case, I’ve had to make an important decision and I have no doubts; I think it’s a huge step for me.
“When you’re a child, you dream of playing for the big clubs, and I think Real Madrid is one of them.
“It’s the team with the most Champions League titles in the world and I hope to win trophies with them and have a wonderful spell there.”
Ambition, not nostalgia, drove the move. The badge he once wore as a teenager gave way to the chance of competing for the game’s biggest prizes in white.
Mourinho’s call
Behind the scenes, Mourinho’s influence loomed large. The Portuguese coach had identified Cucurella as a priority signing and moved quickly to make his intentions clear.
“We had a chat and he told me he was really keen to work with me, that I’d settle in very well, and that Real Madrid was a great club.
“Then, that was it – he wished me all the best for the World Cup and said we’d see each other in Madrid.”
The message was simple: you’re wanted, you’ll fit, and the door is open.
Reports suggested Mourinho had pushed especially hard for the deal, even to the point of framing Cucurella as the left-back he had to have. On that, the defender kept his distance from the hyperbole.
“Did he say, ‘It’s either you or I won’t sign any left-back’? No, I don’t know if he said that.”
What he does know is that the conversation, the club, and the timing aligned. In the space of 48 hours, a long courtship from several clubs turned into a decisive sprint won by Real Madrid.
For Cucurella, the debate is over. The next one starts when he pulls on the shirt and has to prove that this whirlwind decision can anchor a long, trophy-laden stay at the Bernabeu.
