Manchester United Reject Barcelona's Interest in Sesko as Lewandowski Successor

Barcelona’s search for Robert Lewandowski’s successor has taken them to Old Trafford. Manchester United’s response has been blunt: look elsewhere.

Reports in Spain placed Benjamin Sesko on a Barcelona shortlist as the Catalan club piece together a new attacking plan for life after Lewandowski, who is set to leave the Nou Camp after four years. Marca named the Slovenian alongside Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy as options under consideration, with Barca also locked in a complicated pursuit of Julian Alvarez.

The Spanish side have been pushing hard to land Alvarez from Atletico Madrid but are yet to break the deadlock. As that chase stalls, Sesko’s name has surfaced not only as a possible Barcelona target but also as a potential replacement for Alvarez at Atletico if the Argentine moves on.

United, though, are having none of it.

The club have made it clear they have no interest in cashing in on Sesko after just one season in Manchester. Signed from RB Leipzig for £73 million last summer, the 23-year-old took time to adjust but grew into the campaign, ending with 12 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions. Eleven of those came in the Premier League, at an impressive rate of one every 149 minutes.

Inside Old Trafford, there is no sense of a player being prepared for sale. Quite the opposite. United are delighted with his trajectory and view Sesko as their long-term No. 9, especially now that Rasmus Hojlund has completed a permanent £38 million move to Napoli.

The numbers back up that conviction. Sesko featured in all but one of the 31 league games for which he was available, though he started only 17 of them. His role grew under Michael Carrick, who took over from Ruben Amorim in January and quickly formed a strong working relationship with the forward, alongside first-team coach Travis Binnion.

The extra hours mattered. Sesko spent time on individual drills at Carrick’s request, sharpening his movement, link-up play and penalty-box instincts. The payoff was clear: seven of his 12 goals arrived after Carrick’s appointment, a surge that turned a steady debut season into a statement of intent.

He began only six of Carrick’s 17 matches in charge, yet still forced his way into the heart of United’s plans. That is why the club’s stance is so firm now. At a time when Barcelona are scouring Europe for a new focal point, United believe they already have theirs.

Sesko is no longer just a name on someone else’s shortlist. At Old Trafford, he is the project. Next season, the expectation is simple: more minutes, more responsibility, more goals.
