Transfer Market Heat: Gakpo, Gvardiol, and Cucurella Updates
The managerial carousel has barely stopped spinning and already the transfer market is threatening to tear up the summer script.
Gakpo unsettled as Slot exits
At Liverpool, the aftershocks of Arne Slot’s departure are beginning to bite. Cody Gakpo, once a flagship signing for the Dutch coach, now wants out of Anfield, with Tottenham Hotspur sensing an opening. Spurs are optimistic they can bring the Netherlands international to north London, a move that would add yet more firepower to Ange Postecoglou’s evolving attack.
While Gakpo looks for the exit, Harvey Elliott is moving the other way emotionally. The midfielder believes he can rebuild his Liverpool career in the post-Slot era and is prepared to fight for his place rather than join the summer exodus.
Manchester United cast a wide net
Across the northwest, Manchester United are spreading their search across Europe. Talks have already taken place over Newcastle United left back Lewis Hall, but United are not stopping there. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown remain on their radar as the club tries to reshape its options on the left side of defence.
At centre-forward, the decision appears far more decisive. United have settled on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as their main target, with a deal expected to cost around $58 million (€50 million, £43 million). After years of patchwork solutions up front, United seem ready to pay for a more permanent answer.
Arsenal juggle arrivals and exits
Arsenal are also busy on multiple fronts. The Gunners have joined United in exploring a move for 20-year-old Porto winger William Gomes, a talent who has also caught the eye of Atlético Madrid. The Emirates hierarchy are clearly intent on adding more youth and width to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
At the same time, Arsenal look prepared to cash in on Leandro Trossard. The Belgian is open for sale, with Beşiktaş identifying him as their top summer target. Interest does not stop there: Atlético Madrid, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Inter and Juventus are all monitoring his situation, turning Trossard into one of the more intriguing attacking options on the market.
Midfield is another battleground. Departing Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has drawn attention from both Arsenal and Juventus, with his experience and physicality offering an immediate upgrade to any side willing to meet his demands.
Bowen commits, Chelsea circle
Further east in London, West Ham United have been handed a crucial boost. Jarrod Bowen has assured the club he wants to stay and help drive the Hammers back to the Premier League, despite firm interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle. In a window defined by uncertainty, Bowen’s stance gives West Ham a rare dose of stability.
Chelsea, though, are everywhere. The agent of Köln winger Said El Mala is actively turning away other approaches in a bid to lure the Blues into making a formal offer. Their scouting network has also been busy: Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been watched closely over the past season, hinting at potential change in Chelsea’s goalkeeping department.
Newcastle rebuild after Gordon’s sale
Newcastle United, having lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, are already moving on. The club have settled on Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz as their preferred replacement, a clear attempt to plug a major hole in their attack before pre-season gathers pace.
Gvardiol and the looming Real Madrid question
At Manchester City, Joško Gvardiol sits at the centre of one of the summer’s biggest storylines. The defender hopes to leave the club, and City are not expected to block a move if he formally requests a transfer to Real Madrid. The champions still want to convince him to stay with a new contract, but have drawn a hard financial line: any suitor will need to put around $105 million (€90 million, £78 million) on the table.
La Liga: Cucurella chase and Kepa’s crossroads
In Spain, Atlético Madrid are pushing to secure Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella before a bidding war erupts. They want the deal wrapped up quickly, yet their ceiling of $58 million (€50 million, £43 million) falls well short of Chelsea’s $81 million (€70 million, £61 million) valuation. The gap is clear; the question is who blinks first.
Another Chelsea-related saga is brewing in goal. Kepa Arrizabalaga is weighing up a departure from Arsenal and a return to La Liga. Sevilla and Villarreal are both interested, with a potential deal worth around $5.8 million (€5 million, £4.3 million) on the table. For a player once signed for a world-record fee, it marks a stark reset.
Barcelona, for their part, have slammed the door shut on any talk around Fermín López. The midfielder is considered completely untouchable at Camp Nou, a rare non-negotiable in a squad often linked with sales.
Mourinho’s Madrid plans begin
At Real Madrid, the José Mourinho era has not yet officially begun, but the recruitment whispers already have his fingerprints on them. The incoming coach has expressed interest in West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, a move that would add fresh energy to Madrid’s engine room.
On the flanks, Brahim Díaz has made his stance clear. Despite interest from Serie A, he has no intention of leaving the Bernabéu this summer, giving Mourinho at least one guaranteed attacking option amid all the noise.
Cancelo, Barcelona and Al Hilal’s stance
The João Cancelo puzzle could also move quickly. Al Hilal are ready to negotiate with Barcelona over a permanent deal for the defender and appear willing to lower their asking price from the previously quoted $17 million (€15 million). Barcelona want clarity at full-back; Al Hilal want resolution and funds. That compromise feels close.
Gakpo’s unrest, Gvardiol’s dilemma, Cucurella’s price tag, Mourinho’s demands—every thread points to the same conclusion: the market is already running hot, and the real moves have barely begun.
