Liverpool Pursues Bradley Barcola Amid Diomande Exit
Liverpool’s search for a new winger has taken a sharp turn towards Paris – and towards Bradley Barcola.
With Yan Diomande edging closer to Paris Saint-Germain, Barcola has moved high up Liverpool’s list of alternatives as the club reshapes its attack in the wake of Mohamed Salah’s departure.
Diomande slipping away
For months, Diomande has been the preferred option at Anfield. The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international, currently at RB Leipzig, was identified as the headline signing for Liverpool’s new forward line.
But there is a line Liverpool will not cross.
Leipzig want significantly more than the £86m Liverpool were prepared to pay. The Premier League side have been unwilling to go beyond that figure, and that stance has opened the door for PSG.
The French and European champions have a contract agreed with Diomande until 2031. The player has indicated his preference to join them, and while club-to-club talks with Leipzig are still ongoing, the momentum is firmly with Luis Enrique’s side.
For Liverpool, that means Plan B must be ready.
Barcola: opportunity in Paris
Barcola is not a cast-off, nor a fringe name plucked from nowhere. At 23, the PSG winger is seen inside the game as a high-ceiling talent, but one whose future in Paris is no longer guaranteed.
His frustration has been building. Being overlooked for the biggest nights, most notably the Champions League final win against Arsenal, has left him questioning his role at a club stacked with attacking options.
PSG would prefer to keep him. They see his value, and they are not prepared to let him leave cheaply. Yet the stance is clear: if Barcola returns from the World Cup with France still unhappy, and if a club meets their valuation, they will not stand in his way.
With two years left on his contract, this summer is a pivotal moment. Extend, or cash in. If he refuses a new deal, this is the window for PSG to maximise his price.
Liverpool are watching that situation closely.
Life after Salah
This is not a routine refresh of the squad. Salah has gone. For the first time in years, Liverpool must construct a front line without the guarantee of his goals and presence on the right.
The work has already started.
Victor Munoz has arrived from Osasuna for £34.5m, adding another option in the wide areas. Jeremy Jacquet has joined from Rennes for £60m, bolstering the squad further. But the club’s recruitment team know they still need a winger capable of carrying serious responsibility in the final third.
Diomande was supposed to be that player. If PSG complete the deal, Liverpool will need someone who can change games from the flank, grow into a leading role and fit the club’s attacking intensity.
Barcola ticks a lot of those boxes, which is why he features so prominently among the options being discussed.
Arsenal lurking, but looking elsewhere
Liverpool are not alone in their admiration.
Arsenal have also monitored Barcola, keeping tabs on his situation in Paris. Yet their left-wing priority, as it stands, is Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa. That focus gives Liverpool more room to manoeuvre if they decide to push hard for Barcola.
The battle for elite wide forwards is always tight, always expensive. This summer is no different.
A decisive summer at Anfield
The outgoing list underlines the scale of the rebuild. Andy Robertson has left for Tottenham on a free. Ibrahima Konate has gone to Real Madrid, also on a free. Salah has been released, as has Rhys Williams.
Key figures from the Klopp era are gone. A new core has to emerge.
Liverpool’s refusal to be dragged into a bidding war for Diomande shows a club sticking to its valuation principles. The question now is whether they are prepared to pivot quickly and decisively towards Barcola, and whether PSG’s price will allow it.
One winger is heading for Paris. Another might have to leave it.
Liverpool’s next move in this market will say a lot about how bold this new era is prepared to be.
