Thomas Partey Set to Leave Villarreal After One Season

Thomas Partey’s time at Villarreal CF is heading for a quiet, almost inevitable conclusion.

The Ghana international, who arrived in Spain last year on a one-year deal after leaving Arsenal F.C. on a free, is expected to move on again this summer, with the club reportedly choosing not to trigger the option for an extra season.

It was meant to be a reset. A familiar league, a system he knew from his Atlético Madrid days, and a chance to re-establish himself as a commanding presence in midfield. Instead, his year in yellow has been stop–start.

Minor injuries kept interrupting any rhythm he tried to build. He has still managed 30 appearances in all competitions, a number that suggests involvement, but not influence. He never truly nailed down a guaranteed starting spot, often drifting in and out of the XI as Villarreal searched for consistency elsewhere.

As the season winds down, the picture has sharpened. With the extension clause unlikely to be activated, Partey is poised to leave as a free agent, stepping back onto a market that once regarded him as one of Europe’s most complete midfielders.

His club future may be uncertain, but his international status is not heading for the same crossroads.

Despite his uneven club campaign, Partey remains central to Ghana’s long-term plans. The 31-year-old is widely expected to feature for the Black Stars as they build towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, a tournament that offers him a different kind of stage and, perhaps, a final chance to lead a generation on the biggest platform of all.

For now, his next employer is unknown. His next mission is not.
