Tariq Lamptey Joins QPR: A New Chapter Begins

Tariq Lamptey’s career has rarely followed the easy road. Queens Park Rangers are banking on that stubborn streak carrying him – and them – into a very different chapter.

The 25-year-old right-back has joined QPR on a free transfer after leaving Fiorentina, a move that would have sounded improbable when he burst onto the Premier League scene with Chelsea and then lit up Brighton’s right flank with his pace and aggression. The talent was never in doubt. The body, recently, has been another matter.

Lamptey arrived in Florence from Brighton in September 2025, a smart-looking switch to Serie A that never really had the chance to breathe. A serious knee injury cut him down early; he managed only two appearances for Fiorentina before the season became a long, lonely battle for fitness.

Now comes the reset.

“My recovery (from injury) has gone well and I'm not too far away now. I'm looking forward to joining with the boys,” he told the club’s website, a line that carried more relief than fanfare. Then came the reminder of what has always driven him: “Throughout my football journey I've always been resilient.”

That journey began in the academy corridors at Chelsea, where Lamptey forced his way into first-team contention in an environment not known for sentiment. His Premier League debut came at the Emirates, thrown into a high-pressure game against Arsenal. He coped, as he usually does, by attacking the problem head-on.

The real breakthrough, though, came after his move to Brighton. On the south coast he became one of the league’s most exciting young full-backs, a blur of overlapping runs and last-ditch recoveries, racking up more than 120 appearances for the Seagulls and earning admirers well beyond England.

Internationally, he made an even more personal decision. Having represented England at under-21 level, Lamptey switched allegiance to Ghana and featured at the 2022 World Cup. He now has 11 senior caps for the Black Stars, proof that his game travels and that his ceiling, when fit, remains high.

QPR clearly believe that version of Lamptey is not far away.

“We've had good conversations about what he wants to achieve and how he feels that this is the right environment for him to flourish in,” said chief executive Christian Nourry, outlining a pitch that has convinced a player with options. “His decision to join QPR over a myriad of other EFL Championship clubs and clubs abroad is a further signal of the growing potential of this football club.”

The club have chosen not to disclose the length or terms of Lamptey’s contract, a quiet detail that only sharpens the sense of a calculated gamble. If his knee holds and his sharpness returns, QPR gain a dynamic, international-level full-back entering what should be his prime years. If it doesn’t, they will at least have stayed true to a strategy built on opportunity and upside.

For Lamptey, the stakes are more personal. This is a chance to reclaim rhythm, to swap rehab rooms for raucous away ends and to turn resilience from a talking point into a weekly performance.

QPR open their new Championship campaign away at Portsmouth on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST). By then, supporters will want one thing above all: to see Lamptey back where he belongs, sprinting into space with the season stretching out in front of him.
