Liverpool's Pursuit of Yan Diomande: PSG's Dominance

Liverpool have gone back in for Yan Diomande, but this tug of war looks destined to end in Paris, not Anfield.

The Premier League club have made a late attempt to hijack the 19-year-old winger’s move to PSG, pushing hard after seeing a €100m offer rejected by RB Leipzig earlier in the window. It has not shifted the player’s stance. Diomande wants PSG, and the French champions are closing in.

Salah’s shadow and Liverpool’s gamble

Liverpool entered the summer with one overriding problem: replacing Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian’s departure at the end of his contract has blown a hole down the right flank, the channel he made his own for a decade. Diomande was quickly installed as the preferred solution.

Right-sided, explosive, and comfortable hugging the touchline or driving inside, the Leipzig winger became Liverpool’s top target for the wide areas. They backed that conviction with money. An official bid worth €100m (£85m) went in and was turned down.

Reports differ on the structure – either €90m plus €10m in add-ons, or €80m plus €20m – but the bottom line is clear: €100m on the table, flatly rejected. When Diomande then indicated he wanted PSG, Liverpool’s pursuit looked effectively over.

It should have been the end of the story. It wasn’t.

PSG turn the screw

As Liverpool pivoted towards Bradley Barcola, sensing Diomande was slipping away, PSG doubled down.

TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reports that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all made late approaches to test the waters once more. Only one of those clubs had already lodged a huge bid and built a recruitment plan around the player. Liverpool were the serious threat.

The response from Diomande’s camp did not change. His preference is PSG.

Any suggestion that PSG were cooling on the deal has been pushed aside. Bailey states that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has now taken personal control of negotiations with Leipzig, a move that has shifted the dynamic sharply in the French club’s favour.

Al-Khelaifi’s strong relationship with Red Bull’s hierarchy has helped accelerate talks. Leipzig, according to sources close to the discussions, have effectively accepted that Diomande is heading for Paris. The Bundesliga side are increasingly resigned to losing him, and PSG are moving towards an agreement.

The expected price? Around €110m (£93.5m) – a fee that underlines how highly the European champions rate the Ivorian.

Liverpool’s late push, PSG’s decisive move

Liverpool’s renewed effort has been just that: late, aggressive, but ultimately reactive.

They have tried to drag Diomande’s decision back towards Merseyside, hoping that their earlier commitment and the promise of a starring role in the post-Salah era might turn his head. Arsenal and Manchester City have also registered their interest, but neither has matched Liverpool’s intensity or urgency.

It has not mattered. Diomande’s mind is set on PSG, and PSG have matched that conviction with hard cash and direct intervention from the very top of the club.

For Leipzig, the sequence is brutal but familiar. A top talent is identified, developed, and then sold at a premium once Europe’s elite come calling. Internally, they are understood to have accepted that the winger is “closing in” on a move to Paris. The only real question now concerns the final details of the fee and structure, not the destination.

Back to Barcola

With Diomande drifting out of reach, Liverpool are preparing to turn fully back to Barcola.

The France international finds himself at an impasse with PSG over a new and improved contract. Talks have stalled, and PSG are open to a sale at the right price, particularly if Diomande arrives and crowds the attacking picture even further.

For Liverpool, Barcola is not the original prize, but he is a serious option. Young, technically sharp, and capable of operating across the front line, he fits the age and profile of the squad being built. FSG have already ramped up efforts to explore that route once Diomande’s Paris preference became clear.

The irony is hard to miss: Diomande’s arrival at PSG could be the trigger that frees up the very player Liverpool now see as the most realistic alternative.

Liverpool wanted the headline act. Unless something extraordinary changes at the eleventh hour, they may have to settle for the opportunity that falls out of PSG’s next blockbuster instead.
