Rory Finneran Joins Republic of Ireland Senior Squad

Rory Finneran’s senior breakthrough has arrived sooner than most expected – and in the heat of a makeshift international window.

The 18-year-old Newcastle United midfielder has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland senior squad for the first time, joining Heimir Hallgrimsson’s group at their training camp in Murcia ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Grenada at the Estadio Nueva Condomina (17:00 BST).

For a player who only moved to Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, it is a rapid rise. Finneran has been a regular presence in Ireland’s youth set-up at under-17 and under-19 level, but this is his first taste of the full international environment, earned in a week where Hallgrimsson’s plans have been repeatedly reshaped.

The call came after a flurry of withdrawals. Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Ipswich Town winger Kasey McAteer have both been ruled out through injury, forcing Ireland to shuffle their options late in the build-up.

Another twist followed. Benfica attacker Jaden Umeh, initially handed his own first senior call-up, has been pulled out of the squad by his club.

This is the reality of a friendly staged outside Fifa’s official international window. National teams can ask; clubs can simply say no. Benfica have done exactly that, with their under-19 side locked into a must-win clash against Famalicao on Saturday as they chase qualification for the Uefa Youth League.

Umeh’s importance to that cause is obvious. He scored twice in a 6-2 win over UD Leiria on Sunday, form that Benfica are in no mood to sacrifice at such a critical point in their youth campaign.

“Benfica are still fighting in their U19s to be in the Uefa Youth League,” Hallgrimsson explained. “The plan was for them to have secured that by now, but unfortunately, results this weekend didn't go their way, so Jaden still has one more game to play.

“We knew beforehand that this was a possibility, even if it was unlikely.

“It is unlucky for him that the results went that way, as we were looking forward to working with him, but we understand the club's position and will have to wait for a future window to bring him into the environment.”

So Umeh waits. Finneran steps in.

For Hallgrimsson, the camp in Spain becomes a blend of contingency planning and opportunity. Injuries have bitten, club demands have intervened, yet an 18-year-old midfielder now walks into a senior dressing room with a chance to accelerate his international education.

Ireland’s meeting with Grenada will not define a campaign. It will, though, offer a glimpse of what comes next – and for Finneran, it could be the first real marker of a long-term role in green.
