France vs Norway: Tactical Changes and Key Gambles
In a decisive Group I clash on Friday, France have reshaped their spine with four changes, yet kept their most feared blades unsheathed up front, while Norway have made the bold call to leave Erling Haaland on the bench.
France tweak the core, keep the edge
Maxence Lacroix steps into the back line, joined by Theo Hernandez, whose drive from left-back will be crucial against a Norway side that can sit deep and spring forward. Aurelien Tchouameni returns to anchor midfield, offering balance and bite, and Desire Doue is handed a start in attack, a nod to freshness and flair in the final third.
Despite the rotation, France are not easing off. The first-choice attacking trio stays intact: Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele all start. That is a statement. Group I still hangs in the balance, and France clearly intend to grab it by the throat rather than manage their way through 90 minutes.
The night carries a different weight on the touchline. Assistant coach Guy Stephan leads the team, stepping in for Didier Deschamps, who has returned home following the death of his mother. It adds a layer of emotion to a game that was already loaded with consequence.
Haaland held back as Norway gamble
On the other side, the headline is stark: Haaland starts on the bench.
For Norway, it is a calculated risk. Rest their star forward at the start, trust the collective, and hope the game opens up for him later. Or protect fitness. Or change the dynamic. Whatever the reasoning, it strips the contest, at least initially, of the Mbappe–Haaland billing that would dominate any stage.
What it does not change is the equation. Both France and Norway need a win to finish top of Group I. No one can play for safety. Not tonight.
France have chosen rotation without compromise. Norway have chosen patience with their main striker. Only one of those gambles will look brave by the final whistle.
