Newcastle United Target Ajax Midfielder Sean Steur as Tonali Replacement
Newcastle United are on the verge of reshaping the heart of their midfield around one of Ajax’s most talked‑about prospects. Sean Steur, an 18-year-old two-footed central midfielder, is close to completing a move from Amsterdam to Tyneside in a deal worth about £23m.
At Ajax, Steur has been trailed as the club’s brightest emerging midfield talent since Frenkie de Jong. That is not a comparison made lightly in those parts. De Jong left for Barcelona in 2019; now another gifted controller, capable of dictating tempo from deep or driving play higher up, is preparing to follow his own path abroad.
Steur can operate as either a No 6 or a No 8, and Newcastle see that versatility as central to the next phase of Eddie Howe’s rebuild. At St James’ Park he is expected to begin next season competing directly with Lewis Miley to inherit the central role once occupied by Sandro Tonali, who has joined Tottenham in a deal that could eventually be worth £100m to Newcastle.
This is the pivot point of Howe’s summer. Tonali’s departure has ripped out a key piece of his original project, but it has also handed him the funds and freedom to remodel the midfield around youth, mobility and technical range. Steur fits that profile almost perfectly.
His rise at Ajax has been rapid. He started last season in the club’s youth ranks, then forced his way into the first team and stayed there, making 25 senior appearances. Within months, the Netherlands Under-19 international had been tagged as one of the Eredivisie’s standout young midfielders, his composure in possession and ability off both feet marking him out from his peers.
Newcastle do not intend to rush him. Howe and his staff are prepared to give Steur time to adapt to the Premier League’s pace and physical edge, bedding him in alongside Miley rather than dropping him in as an instant saviour. The expectation is that the competition between the two teenagers for that central berth will drive standards up and, in time, define the club’s midfield for years.
From De Jong’s old stage in Amsterdam to the noise of St James’ Park, Steur is stepping into a bigger, harsher spotlight. Newcastle are betting £23m that he is ready for it.
