Manuel Neuer Sits Out Cup Final to Focus on World Cup
Manuel Neuer has never been a man for half-measures. This time, though, the 40-year-old has chosen caution over heroics.
Despite steady progress in his recovery, a residual risk remains, according to Sky. With a World Cup on the horizon and the German No. 1 shirt effectively waiting for him, Neuer has decided not to roll the dice on a DFB Cup final.
So the stage belongs to Jonas Urbig.
The 22-year-old will again stand in for Neuer in the final, making his 20th appearance of the season – and the most significant outing of his young career. From backup to centre stage, Urbig now walks into a game that can define reputations in a single evening.
Sven Ulreich and Jannis Bärtl are also named in Vincent Kompany’s squad, but it is Urbig who carries the gloves and the pressure.
Neuer’s absence does not come out of nowhere. The veteran has already missed spells in December, February and March with muscle-fibre tears. On the final Bundesliga matchday, a 5–1 win over 1. FC Köln last Saturday, he was substituted as a precaution after feeling calf problems. The alarm bells did not ring loudly, but they rang long enough.
Just a day earlier, Neuer had underlined his commitment to the club by extending his expiring contract until 2027. On Thursday, national team coach Julian Nagelsmann still named him in Germany’s squad for the North American World Cup, a clear sign of trust in his status and fitness trajectory. The DFB side will begin their preparations on Wednesday in Herzogenaurach, with Neuer expected to reclaim his familiar role between the posts.
“The World Cup isn't in jeopardy, but he can't play tomorrow,” he said. “It's simply too soon after Saturday's injury. There's no point risking further damage by starting him in the cup final. We made this decision together, even if it was tough for Manu to miss the final.”
That is the crux of it. A cup final sacrificed to protect a World Cup.
For Neuer, missing a domestic showpiece hurts. For Urbig, it opens a door that rarely swings this wide for a 22-year-old goalkeeper. One veteran steps aside, not because the moment is too big, but because the next one is bigger still.
