Manchester United's Midfield Overhaul: Ederson and Mateus Fernandes Incoming
Manchester United are preparing for a summer of major surgery in midfield, with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte heading for the exit and deals for Ederson and Mateus Fernandes moving into sharp focus.
Casemiro, outstanding across this campaign but now 34, will not have his contract renewed and is set to walk away on a free transfer. Ugarte, signed for £50.5 million and expected to anchor United’s engine room for years, is being lined up for sale after failing to justify that fee.
The message from Old Trafford is clear: the midfield that carried them this season will not be the one that carries them into the next.
Anderson blow forces a rethink
United had marked Elliot Anderson as a priority target, only to see Manchester City steal a march in the race for the midfielder. Missing out on Anderson has forced a rapid recalibration of plans and pushed two names to the top of the list: Atalanta’s Ederson and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.
Ederson’s move is the closest. Talks with Atalanta are already at an advanced stage, with talkSPORT reporting that United are “closing in” on a deal worth up to £43m. The Brazilian has given the green light to the transfer and is ready to commit to a five-year contract, a clear sign that United view him as a central piece of their next cycle rather than a stopgap.
Once Ederson is through the door, attention is expected to swing fully towards Fernandes.
United push to the front for Mateus Fernandes
CaughtOffside report that United now “lead the race” for the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder and have become the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with his representatives. The groundwork, they say, has been done. United have pushed harder and earlier than their rivals.
And there are plenty of rivals.
Arsenal are interested and see Fernandes as a possible successor to Christian Norgaard. Chelsea and Aston Villa are watching closely. Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are in the background, tracking his situation as West Ham adjust to life after relegation.
Yet United hold two crucial advantages. First, the intensity of their pursuit. Second, the pull of the dressing room.
Fernandes is keen on the idea of lining up alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes, a player whose influence at Old Trafford stretches far beyond his goals and assists. The younger Fernandes also wants Champions League football, something United can put on the table as they rebuild with Europe’s elite competition in mind.
Early suggestions placed his price tag as high as £80m, a figure that would have tested any bidder’s resolve. CaughtOffside now claim West Ham’s relegation has shifted the numbers, with the midfielder understood to be available in the €50–60m range (£43–52m). For a 21-year-old with his ceiling, that changes the conversation.
A full-scale rebuild, not a tweak
If Ederson arrives as expected and Fernandes follows, United’s midfield will look dramatically different in both age profile and style. Casemiro’s experience and Ugarte’s unfulfilled promise would be replaced by a Brazilian in his prime and a Portuguese prospect eager to grow alongside Bruno Fernandes.
And United might not stop there.
According to the Daily Mail’s United correspondent Chris Wheeler, the club are also planning a £20m move for an additional midfield option, with Southampton’s Shea Charles identified as a target. That would take the tally to three new midfielders, underlining just how aggressively United intend to reshape the core of their side.
For years, Old Trafford has talked about “refreshing” the midfield. This summer, it looks less like a refresh and more like a reset.
