Manchester United Turns to Manu Kone After Tchouameni's Madrid Commitment
Manchester United have been forced to rip up their midfield dream and turn back to a familiar name.
With Aurelien Tchouameni off the table after committing his future to Real Madrid, attention at Old Trafford has swung decisively towards Manu Kone – and this time the interest looks far more serious.
Tchouameni dream dies with Mourinho’s Madrid return
United’s hierarchy had quietly placed Tchouameni at the very top of their list to succeed Casemiro. The 26-year-old, already the Brazilian’s heir at the Bernabeu, was viewed as the perfect blend of age, pedigree and power to anchor Michael Carrick’s evolving side.
There had been genuine optimism in Manchester that Madrid might cash in. The European champions have been heavily linked with blockbuster midfield additions such as Rodri and Enzo Fernandez, and the numbers involved hinted at a potential sacrifice.
Then came the twist.
After talks with Jose Mourinho – set for a dramatic return to the Madrid dugout 13 years after his first spell – Tchouameni chose to sign a new deal and tie his long-term future to the Spanish giants. Any lingering hope at Old Trafford evaporated in an instant.
Behind the scenes, there is a feeling that Tchouameni’s camp, whose agent also represents Kone, had been happy to let United’s interest run in order to sharpen their negotiating position with Madrid. Those close to the situation still insist a move might have been possible had Madrid opened the door, but that door is now firmly shut.
So United have turned to the other French midfielder in the same stable.
Kone moves to the front of the queue
According to TEAMtalk, United are now actively “plotting a move” for Kone after learning of Roma’s stance and price. The Serie A club value the 25-year-old at around £50 million and, crucially, are under pressure to sell.
Roma’s third-place finish and return to the Champions League have not erased their financial concerns. The club must raise funds to stay on the right side of UEFA’s regulations, and internally Kone is viewed as their most valuable saleable asset.
Intermediaries have already been busy. Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been sounded out as potential destinations, with the Premier League emerging as the likeliest next step.
United, armed with INEOS’ backing and a clear need to refresh their midfield, are firmly in that conversation.
A profile built for England
Kone’s appeal is obvious. A 6ft 1in midfielder with the frame to survive the Premier League’s collisions and the technique to rise above them, he offers the kind of blend United have struggled to find since Casemiro’s form dipped.
Reports describe him as a powerful duel-winner with strong ball-carrying ability, a player who can break up play and then surge through lines rather than simply recycle possession. For a club trying to inject more intensity and verticality into its play, that profile is gold.
Kone is understood to be open to England and, according to a previous report relayed by The Peoples Person, “very keen” on becoming a United player. The World Cup only strengthened that case. His performances in Qatar are said to have “enhanced his growing reputation”, showcasing the athleticism and technical quality that have attracted scouts from across Europe.
One game in particular lingers in the memory of recruiters. In France’s 3-0 win over Iraq in the group stage, Kone started in place of the injured Tchouameni, who had been ruled out with an adductor problem. Didier Deschamps trusted him to fill the void. United’s decision-makers have drawn a straight line from that choice to their own thinking now: if he can stand in for Tchouameni for France, why not at club level too?
INEOS weigh their options
The market is moving quickly. TEAMtalk report that INEOS have even been made aware of the potential availability of another Real Madrid midfielder, Eduardo Camavinga. On paper, that is the kind of opportunity that usually makes a recruitment department pause.
This time, it hasn’t. The preference, as it stands, is Kone.
He is seen as a “serious option” to reshape Carrick’s engine room, a signing who would arrive not as a luxury piece but as a central pillar of the next iteration of United’s midfield.
With Tchouameni locked in at Madrid and Roma under pressure to sell, the path is clearer than it has been in years. Now the question is simple: will United move decisively for the Frenchman who once replaced Tchouameni for his country, and could soon be asked to do the same for his club?
