Tchouameni Stays at Real Madrid as Mourinho Turns Away Manchester United
Jose Mourinho has barely settled back into his office at Valdebebas, but he has already dealt his former club Manchester United a sharp reminder of where Real Madrid now sit in the transfer food chain.
Aurelien Tchouameni, a long‑admired target at Old Trafford, has chosen to stay exactly where he is – and for a long time. The France international has agreed a new contract with Real Madrid, extending his stay in the Spanish capital by a further five years, despite concrete interest from United.
The timing stings for the Premier League side. News of Tchouameni’s commitment broke within hours of United finalising a £50million deal with Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, who is due to undergo his medical today (Thursday). United have tracked Santos as part of a wider midfield rebuild, with Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge also on their list.
Brazil’s World Cup exit has also accelerated plans for another target, Ederson, who is now set for his own medical. What remains unclear is whether landing Santos would have ended any realistic pursuit of Tchouameni or whether United were still hoping to prise the Frenchman away from Madrid as a marquee addition.
Either way, that door has been slammed shut.
United’s need is obvious. Even before Manuel Ugarte picked up an injury at the World Cup, the club wanted multiple midfield reinforcements. Ugarte’s setback has only deepened the urgency, leaving Kobbie Mainoo as their only fully fit central midfielder. Financial constraints have already seen them walk away from moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Tchouameni was the dream signing – the kind of all‑court midfielder capable of anchoring a new era at Old Trafford.
He has chosen the Bernabeu instead.
According to RMC Sport, Tchouameni was adamant he would remain at Real Madrid, even as offers and approaches arrived from elsewhere, with United the most prominent suitor. Despite speculation that Madrid might cash in on the former Monaco midfielder, tying him down to a fresh deal quickly became a priority for the La Liga champions.
Mourinho, back in charge at a club he once left in a storm, now looks set to build his midfield around him. Real have already made four signings this summer, but only one of them operates in midfield. Bernardo Silva, the headline arrival, will not directly challenge Tchouameni for his starting role at the base of Mourinho’s side. If anything, Silva’s creativity higher up the pitch makes the Frenchman’s presence even more central to Madrid’s balance.
The message from the Bernabeu is clear: the core of this team is not for sale.
That stance was underlined by Madrid’s unusually forceful public response to speculation linking them with Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. In a lengthy official statement, the club categorically denied any interest in the Argentina international, insisting they had made “no efforts, either directly or indirectly” to sign him and had “no intention of pursuing such an operation.”
Madrid went on to stress their “utmost respect” for Fernandez and for Chelsea, highlighting the “excellent institutional relationship” between the clubs and framing the denial as a matter of principle as much as practicality. They criticised reports that “do not correspond to reality” and “only serve to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved.”
On one front, Real Madrid are closing ranks and locking in their own. On another, they are publicly stepping away from someone else’s star.
For Manchester United, it all adds up to a familiar feeling: watching a world‑class midfielder choose the Bernabeu and a coach they know all too well, while their own rebuild in the centre of the pitch grows more complicated by the week. With Tchouameni off the table and injuries biting, the question now is not whether they will move again in midfield – but how bold, and how late, they dare to be.
