Manchester United's Challenge in Signing Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes has just run into the one obstacle every European giant dreads: a Real Madrid side about to be rebuilt under Florentino Perez and Jose Mourinho.

Perez swept back into office after a landslide presidential victory on Sunday, a result that keeps him at the head of Los Blancos and sets the stage for a familiar face to return. Mourinho, currently at Benfica, is expected to head back to the Bernabeu once his time in Lisbon ends, 13 years after his first spell in charge crashed to a halt.

And that is where United’s problem begins.

Mourinho factor tilts the race

Mourinho is understood to be a firm admirer of Fernandes, his young Portuguese compatriot at West Ham. With the 21-year-old already tipped to leave the London Stadium after relegation from the Premier League, a clean break for the midfielder looked inevitable. United sensed an opportunity.

Now the landscape has shifted. If Mourinho walks back into Madrid with a mandate to refresh an already star-studded midfield, Fernandes instantly becomes a far tougher signing to pull off for Michael Carrick.

Real’s interest changes the tone of any negotiation. Players on the continent rarely turn down the Bernabeu when it calls, even after a trophy-less season. The pull of that white shirt, that stadium, that stage, still trumps almost everything.

West Ham’s hand – strong price, weak position

West Ham are holding out for as much as £80 million for Fernandes, a bold figure for a player emerging from a relegated side. Their bargaining stance looks strong on paper, but the reality of life outside the Premier League could drag the final fee down.

Relegation bites. It tightens budgets, invites opportunistic bids and forces difficult decisions. The Hammers know Fernandes is one of their most valuable assets; the rest of Europe knows it too. Interest from both United and Real Madrid will help, but the clock and the market are not on West Ham’s side.

For Fernandes, though, the situation is almost ideal. Elite clubs circling, a clear route out, and leverage over his next move.

Madrid’s crowded, combustible midfield

Real Madrid already possess one of the most formidable midfields in the game. Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, both linked with moves to Old Trafford earlier in the season after clashing on the training ground, remain central to Perez’s plans.

The club disciplined and fined the pair, but the president has since indicated they will stay in Madrid. That stance closes off two of United’s most ambitious targets and underlines why Fernandes is now such an attractive option for Real.

If Mourinho is installed, Fernandes becomes less of a luxury and more of a project. A young, malleable midfielder he rates highly, dropped into a dressing room already stacked with quality.

United’s midfield puzzle grows

All of this leaves Carrick and United recalibrating. The club are close to bringing in Atalanta’s Ederson as Casemiro heads towards the exit, but one new signing will not solve their midfield rebuild.

Uncertainty around Manuel Ugarte only deepens the need for reinforcements. The Uruguayan, signed for around £50m in 2024, could be allowed to leave for roughly half that figure, a stark admission that the fit has not been right.

United had viewed Fernandes as an ideal profile: young, technically sharp, and available this summer with fewer international complications. He is not part of Portugal’s squad for World Cup 2026, which removes the usual tournament-driven delays and distractions that can slow major transfers.

Now, that advantage risks being wiped out by Madrid’s looming move.

Decision time for Fernandes

For the player, the choice may come down to timing and ambition. At Old Trafford, Fernandes could walk into a midfield in transition, with a realistic chance of becoming a central piece of Carrick’s new structure. At the Bernabeu, he would join a deeper pool of established stars but under a manager who, by all accounts, rates him highly.

West Ham will wait for the best offer. United will decide how far they are willing to go in a bidding war they never wanted. And Fernandes, watching Real Madrid rearm under Perez and Mourinho, may decide that the road out of a relegated side leads not to Manchester, but back to the most unforgiving stage in Europe.
