Aurelien Tchouameni: Liverpool and Man Utd Eye Midfield Star

Aurelien Tchouameni arrived at Real Madrid as the future of their midfield. Two years on, he’s being quietly told there are no guarantees he’s even part of the next chapter.

That message has rippled quickly across the channel. Liverpool and Manchester United, long-time admirers of the France international, have been alerted that one of Europe’s elite holding midfielders may be about to hit the market – and they know the price.

Mourinho’s rebuild puts Tchouameni on the edge

Jose Mourinho has walked into the Bernabeu with a mandate to reshape, not just refine. The defensive line has already been torn up and rebuilt: Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella have arrived to stiffen the back four. Bernardo Silva has been prised from Manchester City to add guile and goals between the lines.

And Madrid are not done.

Enzo Fernandez remains high on their midfield wish list. Rodri, the heartbeat of City’s treble-winning side, is still admired. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is being tracked. There is even talk inside the club of going again for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise.

Those ambitions come at a cost. To fund the next wave of marquee signings, Mourinho’s Madrid need significant sales. Internally, Tchouameni is seen as one of the few assets capable of bringing in a fee that genuinely moves the needle.

That is where the conversation has shifted. Earlier this year, despite his well-publicised training-ground altercation with Federico Valverde, Real Madrid insisted Tchouameni was untouchable. A cornerstone, not a bargaining chip.

Now, that stance has softened.

No guarantees – and a €100m decision

Tchouameni, 26, has been informed that his place in Mourinho’s plans is no longer guaranteed. He is not alone. Fellow French international Eduardo Camavinga has also been made aware he could find himself exposed if Madrid land more midfielders before the window shuts.

This is not a formal transfer list. It is, however, a clear warning: competition is about to intensify, and someone will be sacrificed.

Inside Spain, the figure being discussed is in the region of €100m (£87m, $115m). Madrid believe that valuation strikes a delicate balance. Push much higher and they risk scaring off even the richest suitors at a time when clubs are increasingly wary of inflated fees. Go lower and they undersell a player they still regard as one of the most complete defensive midfielders in the game.

The club know the market. Manchester United have already cooled interest in Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson due to soaring valuations. Liverpool have been equally reluctant to overpay for domestic targets. Tchouameni, though, sits in a different bracket for both.

Liverpool’s long pursuit

Liverpool’s interest is not new. They chased Tchouameni hard during his Monaco days, only to watch him choose Madrid in 2022. The admiration never faded.

At Anfield, concerns linger over the long-term futures and physical durability of several midfielders. The club have scouted Premier League options such as Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, but those are seen as developmental profiles. Tchouameni, by contrast, is viewed as plug-and-play: a player who walks into the starting XI and instantly raises the level.

He fits the template Liverpool have often craved but rarely secured in their prime – a physically dominant, tactically intelligent screen who can dictate tempo and protect a high defensive line. With the right offer, the Reds believe he could become the anchor around which a new midfield is built.

And this time, the door might actually be open.

United see a midfield transformer

At Old Trafford, the view is just as clear. United’s hierarchy have tracked Tchouameni for years and rate him among the very best in his position. The belief inside the club is that he could transform both the balance and quality of their midfield.

United have wrestled with that area of the pitch for a decade: too open in transition, too easy to play through, too reliant on individuals rather than structure. Tchouameni’s blend of athleticism, anticipation and composure on the ball is seen as a direct answer to those long-standing flaws.

The lines of communication have stayed open throughout the summer between his camp and both English giants. With Madrid now signalling a willingness to listen at around €100m, United are firmly in the conversation.

Arsenal and Chelsea watching from a distance

Arsenal and Chelsea have not turned away. Both are monitoring the situation, aware that a player of Tchouameni’s calibre rarely becomes available at anything resembling a realistic price.

For now, though, Liverpool and United are considered the best placed. They have the need, the admiration and the structures to move quickly if Madrid formally decide to cash in.

A high-value asset at a crossroads

From Madrid’s perspective, the logic is cold but clear. Tchouameni has two years left on his current deal. His stock is high after consistent performances at club and international level. Sell now, and they bank a major fee while freeing up space and salary for Mourinho’s evolving blueprint.

Clubs on the buying side see the same picture from a different angle. This is not a speculative punt on potential. Tchouameni has already proved he can operate at the highest level, in the Champions League, in high-pressure league campaigns, and for France. That makes a nine-figure outlay easier to justify than many of the eye-watering prices being floated elsewhere this summer.

The pressure is building on all sides. Mourinho wants his new-look midfield locked in. Liverpool and United do not want to be left scrambling in the final days of the window. Tchouameni, entering what should be the peak years of his career, must decide whether to fight for his place in a crowded Bernabeu engine room or become the centrepiece somewhere else.

If Real Madrid truly open the exit door, the battle between Anfield and Old Trafford for his signature will say plenty about where the power – and the pulling power – in English football really lies.
