Lucas Torreira Files Complaint After Targeted Attack in Istanbul

Lucas Torreira, the former Arsenal midfielder now at the heart of Galatasaray’s engine room, has filed a criminal complaint after being punched in what police are treating as a targeted attack in Istanbul.

The incident unfolded outside a café in a shopping mall in the Camiikebir neighbourhood of the Beyoglu district. Torreira was struck in the face, suffering grazes around his left eye, before officers moved in and detained a man who was allegedly trying to escape the scene in a taxi.

Police later confirmed that the suspect, who is now in custody, already had a criminal record. A restraining order was also in place against him at the time of the assault, underlining the seriousness with which authorities had previously viewed the threat he posed.

The pressure around the case only grew once investigators began to dig. As part of the inquiry, it emerged that the same individual had posted threatening messages directed at Torreira on social media, according to Turkish outlet Haberler. Those posts now form a key strand of the investigation, reinforcing the belief that the Uruguayan was deliberately targeted rather than randomly attacked.

Torreira, 28, has responded forcefully. He has lodged a formal complaint and is pressing charges, pushing the case firmly into the legal arena rather than treating it as an isolated flashpoint in public.

The midfielder has rebuilt his career in Turkey since leaving Arsenal permanently in 2022. After slipping down the pecking order in north London, and spending loan spells at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina, he chose Galatasaray to regain rhythm and relevance. It proved a shrewd move. His combative edge and relentless work rate have helped the Istanbul giants collect silverware, including the Super Lig title.

Torreira’s Arsenal chapter began with high promise. Signed from Sampdoria in 2018 by Unai Emery, he quickly became a fan favourite, his snarling presence in midfield symbolised by a standout performance and goal in the 4-2 north London derby win over Tottenham. That afternoon felt like the start of a long-term bond with the Emirates crowd.

The story changed when Mikel Arteta replaced Emery. Torreira’s role shrank, his influence faded, and his ambition shifted towards regular football and international duty. With a World Cup on the horizon, he pushed for a move that would guarantee minutes.

“I had to have continuity for the World Cup. So that’s why I decided to go to Turkey and Galatasaray,” he explained at the time, highlighting how the club’s project and the presence of Uruguay and Gala goalkeeper Fernando Muslera helped seal the decision.

That decision has since anchored his career in Istanbul. Now, after an attack in the middle of a busy shopping centre and an ongoing criminal case, the focus for Torreira is no longer just on trophies and tournaments, but on ensuring he can continue that career in safety.
