Laois vs London in Tailteann Cup Round 2A

Laois will cross the Irish Sea next as the Tailteann Cup starts to bare its teeth.

Justin McNulty’s side, fresh from a high-scoring win over Wicklow, have been paired with London in Round 2A after Monday’s draw. The subplot writes itself: Laois, who hit 1-23 in their opener, up against a London outfit that tore through Waterford with four first-half goals.

London didn’t just win; they blitzed Waterford. Four green flags before the break set the tone for a statement victory. Now they get Laois on home soil, with McNulty trying to keep his side’s momentum rolling in a competition that can turn sharply with one bad day.

Offaly rewarded, Down or Leitrim await

Offaly’s impressive defeat of Clare has earned them a home tie against the winner of Down v Leitrim in Round 2A.

Conor Laverty’s Down host Leitrim, managed by fellow Mourne man Steven Poacher, on Saturday evening in Newry. There’s plenty riding on it. The winner heads to Offaly in Round 2A; the loser drops into the last-chance bracket but at least gets home advantage against Carlow in Round 2B.

Offaly, buoyed by that 1-17 to 1-14 success in Ennis, will like the look of a home quarter-path. But they’ll know both Down and Leitrim bring physicality and bite, and the margin for error is shrinking fast.

Antrim’s goal glut, Tipp’s resilience

Antrim’s scoreline almost defied belief: 6-17 against Carlow, yet only three points clear after extra-time. Mark Doran’s side showed both their attacking flair and their vulnerability in a wild contest that could have slipped away.

Their reward is a Round 2A showdown with Tipperary. Tipp had to withstand a late surge from Sligo to progress, holding their nerve as the Yeats men came charging back. It’s a pairing that promises scores, and probably drama.

The other Round 2A fixture sees Fermanagh welcome Wexford to Brewster Park. Wexford, Division 3 finalists, come in with pedigree and a point to prove after dismantling Limerick in Round 1. Fermanagh, on home turf, will see this as a chance to plant a serious flag in the ground.

Round 2A fixtures:

  • Antrim v Tipperary
  • Fermanagh v Wexford
  • Offaly v winner of Down/Leitrim
  • London v Laois

Round 2B: last-chance saloon

For the Round 2B teams, the equation is brutally simple: lose and you’re out.

Clare, beaten by Offaly in Ennis, stay at home and will try to reset quickly against Longford. That narrow 1-17 to 1-14 defeat will sting, but they at least avoid the road as they fight to keep their season alive.

Wicklow, who shipped 1-23 to Laois, return to Aughrim needing a response when Limerick visit. The Treaty men were well beaten by Wexford first time out, so both counties arrive nursing bruises and searching for a spark.

Waterford, taken apart by London’s early goal rush, now host Sligo. Sligo ran out of time against Tipperary, their late rally falling just short, and will see this as an immediate opportunity to make amends.

The loser of Down v Leitrim will not have long to lick their wounds. They drop into Round 2B but at home, where Carlow await after that exhausting extra-time loss to Antrim.

Round 2B fixtures:

  • Wicklow v Limerick
  • Clare v Longford
  • Waterford v Sligo
  • Loser of Down/Leitrim v Carlow

All ties are set for 23 and 24 May, with the first-named team enjoying home advantage in both rounds. New York, as scheduled, enter at the preliminary quarter-final stage.

The field is tightening now. For some, it’s about building a run towards Croke Park. For others, the next 70 minutes will decide whether their Tailteann Cup story ends before it ever really begins.
