Kylian Mbappé's Potential Exit from Real Madrid: Saudi Arabia's Financial Power

The idea of Kylian Mbappé leaving Real Madrid already feels dramatic enough. The numbers behind such a move belong in another universe.

Sport finance expert Dr Rob Wilson has laid out the scale of the problem for any club even thinking about prising Mbappé away from the Bernabéu. On paper, he arrived as a free agent. In reality, he might be the most expensive “free” signing football has ever seen.

The €300m “Free Transfer”

Wilson explains that Mbappé’s arrival came with a colossal financial commitment from Real Madrid. Between signing-on fees, loyalty bonuses, image rights structures and the rest of the package, he estimates the club effectively pledged close to €300 million over the life of the contract.

So while there was no transfer fee paid to Paris Saint-Germain, there is nothing remotely cheap about this deal.

“For Real Madrid to consider moving him on... the relationship between club and player will need to really deteriorate significantly, even beyond what we have already seen,” Wilson said, underlining just how valuable a financial asset Mbappé has become. One of the most marketable players on the planet, and one of the most expensive to shift.

That’s the starting point. Then comes the transfer fee.

A Fee Beyond Neymar

Any buyer would have to walk through a financial minefield. Wilson believes Florentino Pérez would not even pick up the phone unless the offer smashes the current world record – the €222m Paris Saint-Germain paid Barcelona for Neymar.

“It would require a significant sum for Real to consider selling him this summer,” Wilson said. “Real Madrid may expect a fee in excess of what Paris Saint-Germain paid to sign Neymar from Barcelona, in fact, and set a new world record fee.”

And that is just the cheque to Madrid.

Once wages and the rest of the package are folded in, Wilson suggests the total cost would climb beyond €350m at the low end. That figure immediately narrows the field. Only a handful of entities in world sport can even think about that kind of outlay.

Which is why one destination stands out.

Why Saudi Arabia Is the Only Serious Landing Spot

Wilson is blunt: those numbers scream Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) has already redrawn the transfer landscape with its spending on stars. Mbappé, though, is a different category of asset. He is not just a striker who scores goals and sells shirts. He is a global commercial machine.

“His brand value off-the-pitch changes the dynamic of any transfer bid into something that has value away from the game too, like with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo,” Wilson said.

Nike. EA Sports. A huge young fanbase. Mbappé sits in that tiny bracket of players whose appeal bleeds into fashion, gaming, lifestyle – the “global luxury athlete brand” as Wilson describes it. That is exactly the type of figure Saudi Arabia wants front and centre as it builds its sporting profile ahead of the 2034 World Cup.

A move to the Middle East would also tap into Mbappé’s existing resonance in Africa and particularly North Africa, a region where his image has long carried weight. PSG profited from that reach. Real Madrid do now. PIF would see the same upside, only multiplied on a national and political scale.

The transfer would not just be a football decision. It would be a branding project.

A Project Turning Sour in Madrid

While the financial calculus is complex, the mood in Madrid is much simpler: tense.

The Mbappé project was supposed to be the next chapter in the club’s myth-making. The superstar to sit alongside Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham and terrify Europe. Instead, tactical friction and an awkward attacking balance have sparked a backlash.

Two seasons without a major trophy have sharpened the debate. Pundits and fans have started to ask the unthinkable: was signing Mbappé actually the wrong move?

On the pitch, the chemistry has not consistently clicked. Off it, the perception battle is being lost. What was marketed as a galáctico renaissance has drifted into a PR crisis, with a historic wave of digital anger aimed squarely at the Frenchman.

Wilson points to the political dimension that always lurks in Madrid.

“If fans start seeing him as a bit of a disruptive force, a player who thinks he's bigger than the club, then the pressure on him and the management can turn toxic very quickly,” he warned.

That toxicity already has a number attached to it. An online petition calling for the 27-year-old’s departure has surged past 70 million signatures. Even if not every click represents a match-going socio, the symbolism is impossible to ignore.

From Untouchable to Transfer Question Mark

Twelve months ago, the idea of Real Madrid even entertaining offers for Mbappé felt absurd. He was the crown jewel, the statement that the club still dictates terms at the top of the game.

Now, the picture is less clear.

If Mbappé fails to flip the narrative on the pitch – fails to turn boos into goals, frustration into trophies – the commercial disappointment could collide with the sporting reality. At that point, Real Madrid’s hierarchy might have to consider what once sounded unthinkable: cashing in on the biggest “free” transfer in history.

The numbers mean only Saudi Arabia can realistically test their resolve. The question is whether the Bernabéu will reach a point where even a player of Mbappé’s stature is no longer worth the noise.
