Kaizer Chiefs Lead Race for Maxwele: Golden Arrows Hold Key

Kaizer Chiefs have moved to the front of the queue for sought-after midfielder Maxwele, but the final say rests firmly in the boardroom at Golden Arrows.

With the transfer window opening on 1 July, the 25-year-old’s future has become one of the early flashpoints of South Africa’s off-season. Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, the country’s two biggest clubs, are circling the same prize again – and this time, the battle is as much political as it is financial.

Chiefs Strike First Blow

According to respected Kaizer Chiefs insider Innocent Mkhize, Amakhosi have already agreed personal terms with Maxwele. The club moved decisively as they look to inject fresh legs and intensity into their midfield ahead of the new campaign.

On the player’s side, the groundwork is done. Salary, contract length, personal conditions – all reportedly settled.

The problem? The deal is not in Chiefs’ hands anymore.

Golden Arrows chairlady Mato Madlala now stands at the crossroads of this transfer. Mkhize indicates that while Chiefs have done everything required to convince the player, Madlala would actually prefer to see Maxwele join Orlando Pirates rather than make the switch to Naturena.

That single preference has turned what looked like a clear path for Chiefs into a potential derby-sized tug-of-war.

A Midfielder Built for the Big Stage

It’s not hard to see why both Soweto giants are pushing hard.

Maxwele arrived at Golden Arrows as a free agent after Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in 2025. What could have been a career setback quickly became a platform. He settled in fast, turned opportunity into consistency, and forced his way into the conversation for a big move.

The Mthatha-born midfielder featured regularly in his first season with Arrows, making 23 league appearances and contributing in cup competitions as well. Across all tournaments, he registered three goals and one assist – modest numbers on paper, but his value stretches far beyond the stat sheet.

Coaches value him for his relentless work rate and aggressive pressing. He hunts the ball, harasses opponents, and drives play forward with his ability to carry the ball through midfield. Crucially, he can operate centrally or drift into wider attacking areas, giving any coach tactical flexibility.

He brings energy. He brings intensity. He brings the kind of dynamism that both Chiefs and Pirates have been accused of lacking at key moments in recent seasons.

Chiefs Ahead – But Only Just

Right now, on a personal level, Kaizer Chiefs have won the race. The player has effectively said yes.

That does not mean he will be unveiled in gold and black.

Golden Arrows still control the contract and, by extension, the destination. Madlala’s stance could tilt the entire saga. If she stands firm on her preference for a Pirates move, negotiations could drag, stall, or twist into a bidding and relationship game between three clubs who know each other all too well.

For Chiefs, it’s a test of how much they want Maxwele and how far they are willing to push to secure him. For Pirates, it’s an invitation to turn admiration into action and try to hijack a deal that seems, for now, tilted towards Naturena.

The transfer window is about to gather momentum. Maxwele’s next move might say a lot about where the power truly lies in South African football’s biggest rivalry this winter.
