Julián Álvarez's Transfer Desire: Barcelona or Arsenal?
Julián Álvarez has stopped hinting. He’s said it out loud.
Fresh from Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup win over Austria, the Atlético Madrid forward made clear he wants out – and made no attempt to hide where his heart lies.
“I spoke with people at the club, with those I had to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” Álvarez said. “It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can't hide it. I try to be an honest person.”
In Spain, nobody needed a translator. His “dream” is understood to be a move to Barcelona.
Barcelona in pole, Arsenal watching
Arsenal are among the clubs circling, monitoring a situation that has simmered all summer. They admire the 26-year-old and have been kept informed of developments.
But Álvarez’s preference is clear. Barcelona have been pushing hardest and longest, tracking him throughout the window and testing Atlético’s resolve despite increasingly strained relations between the two clubs.
Those tensions spilled into the open last month when Atlético mocked Barcelona over their attempts to sign the striker. The tone from the Metropolitano has been defiant ever since.
Atlético dig in, release clause looms
Atlético do not want to sell. Internally, they see Álvarez as the centrepiece of their project, a marquee signing from Manchester City in 2024 for £81m and tied down on a contract until 2030.
Publicly, the club have repeatedly pointed to his release clause: a staggering £431m (€500m). That figure has become their shield, a reminder to suitors that this will not be a bargain raid.
Earlier this month, Real Madrid claimed they had a £129m bid rejected for the Argentine. The offer never developed into a full-blown pursuit and quickly faded, leaving more questions than answers about why the bid – and its rejection – was publicised in the first place.
Atlético seized on the moment to underline that release clause again, using their city rivals’ statement to reinforce their stance that Álvarez is not on the market.
Player wants out, future still unclear
Yet the player has now spoken, and his words cut through the noise. He wants a move. He wants Barcelona.
What he cannot offer, at least not yet, is a timeline.
“It’s not known when it will be resolved,” he admitted, acknowledging the uncertainty that still hangs over his future.
For now, Atlético are standing firm. Barcelona are pushing. Arsenal are waiting in the wings. And one of the most coveted forwards in Europe has made it clear: staying put is no longer part of his dream.
