Johan Manzambi Shines at World Cup: Thomas Müller Urges Bayern to Act
Thomas Müller has seen enough. From Los Angeles to Bavaria, one name is now echoing loudly in his mind: Johan Manzambi.
On Thursday night at SoFi Stadium, the 20-year-old Switzerland midfielder stepped off the bench and tore into Bosnia and Herzegovina, scoring twice in a 4-1 win and turning a routine friendly into a personal showcase. It was the first brace of his career, delivered on the World Cup stage, in front of his family and a global audience.
“Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that. Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight,” Manzambi admitted afterwards.
Plenty of scouts were already watching. Now, the queue is growing.
United circling, Bayern warned
Manchester United’s search for midfield reinforcements has become one of the sagas of the summer. Casemiro has gone, Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow, and Old Trafford’s recruitment team has been busy.
Ederson Silva is on his way in a £35million deal. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes remains firmly on their radar despite fresh interest from Tottenham. Real Madrid, for their part, are understood to be softening their stance on a possible sale of Aurelien Tchouameni, a player admired by both United and Liverpool. From Italy, reports link United with Croatia and Como talent Martin Baturina, who caught the eye with his goal against England in his country’s World Cup opener.
Amid all that noise, Manzambi has moved from “one to watch” to “one you cannot ignore”.
TEAMtalk sources had already confirmed that United had scouted the Freiburg midfielder. Interest from Arsenal was also flagged as far back as March. Five goals and four assists in the Bundesliga last season, delivered with energy and intelligence, pushed him towards the top of several shortlists.
Now Müller wants Bayern Munich to act before the Premier League does.
Müller’s call to action
Müller, who collected 33 trophies in Bayern colours and understands better than most what a modern Bayern midfielder must look like, did not bother hiding his admiration when speaking to MagentaTV.
“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” Müller said. Then he went a step further.
“For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.
“You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic.
“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good.
“He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
That last line carried a smile, but the message behind it was serious. Müller sees a rare blend: positional versatility, tactical maturity, and the freedom of a young player unburdened by expectation.
At Freiburg, Manzambi has been moulded in a demanding environment, asked to press, cover ground, and make good decisions under pressure. For a Bayern side looking to refresh an ageing core while maintaining domestic dominance and European ambition, that profile is gold dust.
A transfer battle in the making
United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace. Arsenal are watching. Other clubs, alerted by his World Cup impact, will not stay quiet for long.
Bayern now face a familiar question: do they trust the word of one of their greatest modern players and move decisively, or risk watching another rising star head to England?
Müller has made his stance crystal clear. The next move belongs to Bayern’s hierarchy – and to a 20-year-old in Freiburg whose summer suddenly looks very different.
