Hugo Ekitike Urges Ibrahima Konate to Sign New Contract

Hugo Ekitike has stepped into the Ibrahima Konate contract saga with the kind of blunt message that cuts through weeks of speculation: “signe frere.”

The Liverpool forward dropped the two-word plea – “sign brother” – under an Instagram post of Konate arriving for France duty, a comment wrapped in laughing emojis but carrying a serious undertone. Liverpool supporters, already flooding the defender’s page with calls to stay, suddenly had an unexpected ally inside the dressing room.

A contract that was “close” – and then wasn’t

Not long ago, Konate sounded confident that an agreement with Liverpool was on the verge of being finalised. Speaking at the Hill Dickinson Stadium after helping the Reds beat Everton, the centre-back gave every impression of a man planning his future on Merseyside.

“For sure, there is a big chance I’m here next season,” he said. “This is what I always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract…”

He even hinted that Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes could one day reveal the full story of their conversations in September and November, suggesting his commitment had been clear long before the noise around his future intensified.

But the paperwork never followed. The optimism faded. Now the expectation inside and outside the club is stark: Konate is set to leave Anfield this summer as a free agent.

Leadership claimed, futures uncertain

That looming departure jars with the way Konate speaks about his role in the squad. With Arne Slot preparing for his first full summer in charge and several senior figures moving on, the Frenchman has openly embraced the responsibility of guiding the next wave.

“I think I'm a leader already for this team, for the younger players, and for everyone to be fair,” he said. He talked about the natural cycle of a big club, where “legends are going to leave one day and after, it's going to be our turn to take the lead.”

Konate believes he has already started that process. “It's a big responsibility,” he added. “We start and we play football to have this kind of chance and to make sure everything is fine for this amazing club. But I need the help of everyone as well.”

Those are not the words of a player easing himself towards the exit. Yet the market is circling.

Five years in red, a free agent in demand

Konate arrived from RB Leipzig in 2021, a signing built on potential and personality as much as physical profile. Across five years at Anfield, he has grown into a central figure in the dressing room and, when fit, a commanding presence on the pitch.

If he does walk away for nothing, he will not be short of admirers. Real Madrid and PSG have already been linked, sensing the rare opportunity to land a high-level defender in his prime without a transfer fee.

Liverpool, meanwhile, face the prospect of losing not just a centre-back, but a self-declared leader at a time when the squad is already bracing for change.

And so Ekitike’s three-word message hangs there, half-joke, half-plea, echoing the mood of a fanbase watching a key pillar edge towards the door.

Sign, brother – or start a new era without him.
