Ederson’s World Cup Call Complicates Manchester United Signing

Manchester United’s first signing of the Michael Carrick era is all but in place. The timing, though, has just become a lot more complicated.

United have agreed a deal with Atalanta to bring Brazilian midfielder Ederson to Old Trafford for an initial £35 million, a move designed to reinforce the heart of their midfield after Casemiro’s departure. The 26-year-old is lined up as the new anchor in front of the back four, the kind of physically dominant, tactically disciplined presence United have been crying out for.

Then Brazil called.

Ederson has received a late summons to the Selecao squad for the 2026 World Cup, drafted in after an injury to Roma right-back Wesley. Initially left out of the original list, he now heads to North America with a chance to reassert himself on the international stage, having earned three caps but not featured for Brazil since 2025.

For United, the move changes the schedule, not the plan. The agreement with Atalanta remains in place and the club still expect Ederson to become Carrick’s first permanent signing. They had hoped to wrap up the transfer swiftly and begin integrating him into pre-season preparations, but the World Cup has intervened.

The pressure of the calendar is obvious. Carrick wants his new midfield general on the training pitch, learning the demands of a new system and a new league. Instead, Ederson will be battling for minutes in a Brazil squad chasing the biggest prize in the game.

United will now have to wait until after the tournament for their new signing to report for club duty. Any medicals, formalities, and unveiling can be managed around the World Cup, but the real work – the on-pitch adaptation – will only start once Brazil’s campaign ends.

His call-up also underlines the scale of United’s global footprint this summer. The club already have 12 players heading to the 2026 World Cup. Once Ederson’s signing is confirmed, he will effectively become number 13 on their list of representatives at the tournament.

For Carrick, that is both a badge of honour and a logistical headache. For Ederson, it is an opportunity: arrive at Old Trafford not just as a new signing, but as a World Cup midfielder in full competitive rhythm.

United have their man. They just have to wait for the World Cup to let him go.
