Declan Rice Isolated as England Prepares for Norway Clash
Declan Rice has been separated from the rest of the England squad after falling ill, with medical staff moving quickly to prevent a potential outbreak on the eve of the quarter-final against Norway.
The Arsenal midfielder, already managing hamstring and lower-back issues after a gruelling season at the Emirates Stadium, has now been hit by a bug that has ruled him out of training for two consecutive days. FA officials have responded by isolating him from the main group, a precaution designed to protect the squad at a critical stage of the World Cup campaign.
The timing could hardly be more delicate. England face Norway in the last eight on Saturday, and while it is not yet clear whether Rice will be fit enough to feature, the mood inside the camp is that the illness has been contained. The staff are determined not to let one sickness derail a tournament carefully built on fine margins and physical sharpness.
Rice’s situation also feeds into a wider headache for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta. The midfielder is already scheduled to report late for pre-season because of his World Cup involvement, and this latest setback only underlines how hard he has pushed his body over the past year. He played through the pain barrier for much of last season in North London; now the wear and tear is catching up at international level.
Arsenal’s summer plans are already being reshaped by the demands of the World Cup. Their preparations begin in Girona on August 1, but Rice will not be there. Neither will Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze or Noni Madueke, all of whom are entitled to a three-week break once England’s tournament ends.
That means the quartet will miss the opening pre-season fixture and, in all likelihood, the second game against Real Betis in Dublin on August 5 if England reach the semi-finals. For a manager as meticulous as Arteta, it is an early-season compromise he would rather not make.
The absences do not stop with England’s contingent. Norway’s Martin Odegaard, France’s William Saliba, Spain’s David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, and Belgium’s Leandro Trossard are also expected to sit out the start of Arsenal’s pre-season schedule. Spain face Belgium tonight for a place in the last four, while France are already there after a 2-0 win over Morocco.
For now, all eyes are on Rice, alone from his teammates, fighting off a bug while the rest of the squad sharpen themselves for Norway. England need his presence and his authority in midfield. Arsenal, watching from afar, simply need him back in one piece.
