Danny Rohl Under European Spotlight as Bayer Leverkusen Considers Coaching Options

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl is starting to feel the full glare of the European spotlight.

The 37-year-old, who has impressed in Glasgow with his sharp tactical work and clear touchline authority, features on Bayer Leverkusen’s shortlist as the German champions weigh up their next move in the dugout. Reports in Germany indicate that Rohl is one of several names under consideration, but the noise around him is growing.

Leverkusen, though, appear to have a preferred path. Bild reports that Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is at the top of their list, with Girona’s highly rated Michel also in the frame. Rohl, for now, sits in that chasing pack of contenders rather than as the frontrunner.

What is clear is that his position at Rangers is not under threat. Sky Germany insists Rohl is in no danger of being sacked and, crucially for the Ibrox board, he is not expected to jump at just any Bundesliga offer. Wolfsburg, recently relegated from the top flight, are unlikely to tempt him. Union Berlin and Leverkusen, by contrast, would carry far more weight, and both are viewed as potentially attractive options as interest in one of Europe’s youngest head coaches spreads.

While Rohl weighs up a future that could soon stretch beyond Scotland, another in-demand manager is closing the door firmly on speculation.

Kieran McKenna, the architect of Ipswich Town’s surge back to the Premier League, is understood to be fully committed to staying at Portman Road. Football Insider reports that McKenna will reject any advances from Celtic, Crystal Palace or Fulham this summer, a stance that underlines both his loyalty to Ipswich and his belief in the project he has built there.

Celtic, though, are busy on several fronts.

The Scottish champions, along with Fulham and Rangers, have made initial enquiries over Huddersfield Town winger Cameron Ashia. The 21-year-old has drawn a queue of admirers: Burnley, Cardiff City, Hoffenheim, Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and Stuttgart have all registered interest. Despite Huddersfield taking up an option to extend his contract by a further year, Ashia could reportedly be available for as little as £500,000 — a price that will only sharpen the focus of clubs seeking value in a volatile market.

Celtic’s own squad is already being picked over by Premier League recruiters. Forward Daizen Maeda has emerged as a target for several English top-flight clubs as the 28-year-old moves closer to a potential summer exit from Glasgow. His relentless work rate and versatility across the front line make him an obvious fit for teams looking for intensity and depth in attack.

There is movement, too, on the fringes of the Celtic squad. Lech Poznan have tabled a cut-price £2m offer for winger Luis Palma following his loan spell in Poland. The 26-year-old has done enough in Ekstraklasa colours to convince Poznan to push for a permanent deal, and Celtic now face a decision on whether to cash in or bring him back into the fold.

Shin Yamada, by contrast, is heading back to Glasgow. The 25-year-old striker will return from his loan at Preussen Munster as head coach Alois Schwartz prepares a major overhaul after the German club’s relegation to the third tier. Yamada’s future now rests on whether Celtic see a role for him in a squad that may look very different by the end of this window.

Managers in demand, rising talents on the move, established names edging towards the exit. The summer market has only just stirred, but the choices made in the next few weeks — from Rohl’s next step to Maeda’s future and Ashia’s first big move — could redraw the map for clubs in Scotland, England and beyond.
