Crystal Palace Pursue Pierre Sage as Coaching Search Evolves
Crystal Palace are preparing to open talks with Lens head coach Pierre Sage this week as their search for Oliver Glasner’s successor takes a fresh turn.
Palace had pushed hard for Andoni Iraola and were ready to hand the Bournemouth manager the reins at Selhurst Park. The plan has shifted. Iraola is now set to enter formal negotiations with Liverpool in the coming days, with the Conference League winners moving quickly after sacking Arne Slot on Saturday.
Palace had made a strong proposal to Iraola and, for a time, confidence grew that he would be the man to lead the next phase in south London. Once Liverpool’s interest hardened, that path effectively closed. The focus has moved.
Sage has emerged as a serious alternative. The 47-year-old Lens boss has been building a reputation as one of Europe’s most progressive coaches, drawing attention for his tactical clarity and ability to develop players. BBC Sport first revealed Palace’s interest in him on 8 May, though at that stage the club hierarchy, led by chairman Steve Parish, were still locked on Iraola as their preferred choice.
That hierarchy is now widening the field. Palace are examining a number of options and are determined not to be bounced into a quick fix after Glasner’s departure. The club want a coach who fits both the squad and the long-term strategy, not just the next name on a shortlist.
Sage, described as open to the move, is expected to meet Palace officials in the coming days. Those discussions will give Parish and his board a closer look at whether one of Ligue 1’s rising tacticians is ready to step into the unforgiving glare of the Premier League – and whether Palace are prepared to entrust their next cycle to a coach on the rise rather than an already-established name.
