Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers Ahead of 2026/27 Season

Ben Godfrey’s winding route through English and European football has brought him to Rangers, with the 28-year-old defender joining ahead of the 2026/27 campaign on a deal that includes an option to make the move permanent next summer.

This is not a punt on potential. It is a calculated move for a player who has already lived the sharp end of the game.

Godfrey’s story began at York City, his hometown club, where he first broke into senior football before earning a switch to Norwich City’s academy. From there, his rise gathered pace. By the 2018/19 season he had forced his way into the Norwich first team, becoming a key figure in the side that surged to promotion to the Premier League. He didn’t just make up the numbers; he anchored a defence that handled the pressure of a promotion charge and delivered.

That composure and athleticism caught Everton’s eye. In the summer of 2020, he moved to Goodison Park and was thrown straight into the intensity of the Merseyside derby, making his debut in a 2-2 draw that underlined the scale of the stage he had reached. Over 100 Premier League appearances followed, a body of work that hardened his reputation as a defender who can live with the pace and physicality of the top level.

His career then took a continental turn. In 2024, Godfrey joined Atalanta, stepping into Serie A and a very different tactical landscape. The Italian spell was followed by a loan to Brøndby for the second half of last season, a stint in the Danish Superliga that added another layer of experience to an already varied CV.

Now comes Ibrox.

On signing for Rangers, Godfrey’s enthusiasm was unmistakable. “I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here. I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said, laying out his intent with the kind of directness supporters warm to quickly. “I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”

The message is clear: he has not arrived in Glasgow for a quiet chapter of his career.

Manager's Insight

Manager Derek McInnes sees exactly that edge in his new signing. “Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career. He’s played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him,” McInnes said, underlining the pedigree Rangers are adding to their back line.

“He’s a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. We’re pleased to get him in, and I’m looking forward to working with him in the season ahead.”

Rangers are not just collecting names; they are assembling profiles. Godfrey arrives as a defender shaped by promotion battles, derby fire, European tactics and the demands of international recognition with England. The club now waits to see how that blend of experience translates under the lights at Ibrox, in a season where talk of silverware will not be tolerated as mere ambition but demanded as expectation.
