Chris Richards' World Cup Dilemma: Pochettino's Tough Decision

Mauricio Pochettino is staring at the kind of World Cup dilemma every national-team coach dreads: build a back line around a defender who isn’t fit, or rip up the plan a week before the tournament starts.

Chris Richards, Crystal Palace’s cultured center-back with 36 caps for the United States, was supposed to be the cornerstone next to captain Tim Ream. Instead, he’s racing the clock.

Richards in limbo as World Cup nears

Richards suffered an ankle injury last month and has not played since Palace’s clash with Brentford on May 17. He watched the Europa Conference League final on May 27 from the bench, unused, and hasn’t kicked a competitive ball since.

Yet his name is on the World Cup squad list.

Under FIFA rules, the United States can still replace him up to 24 hours before their opening game as co-hosts. For now, Pochettino is holding his nerve, but the patience is clearly strained.

“Today, he’s training... but he’s still not ready to compete and to play,” Pochettino said on Friday, laying out the reality as the team prepares to face Germany in Chicago on Saturday without him.

After that high-profile tune-up, the staff will take another hard look at the defender.

“After the Germany game we have the possibility in the next few days to assess him and see his ankle... and then to make a decision.”

Time, though, is not his ally.

A fragile defense, and a missing pillar

The United States open their World Cup campaign in Los Angeles next Friday against Paraguay, the first step in a group that also includes Australia and Turkey. Hosting the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico adds another layer of expectation. Defensive uncertainty is the last thing they need.

The warning signs were already there. In a friendly win over Senegal last weekend, a back line anchored by 38-year-old Ream and Toulouse center-back Mark McKenzie wobbled, conceding twice to Sadio Mané and looking anything but secure.

Richards is meant to be the answer to that. Younger legs, top-flight experience, composure on the ball. Instead, he’s stuck in rehab while the team tries to build chemistry without him.

Pochettino’s anger at the timeline

Pochettino did not hide his irritation at how the injury situation has unfolded. Speaking in Spanish, he made it clear that the information he received during squad selection has not matched reality.

“When we decided on the squad list, we thought Chris might play in the Conference League final,” he said. “Based on the information we had, we believed he could play that final -- and he was actually on the bench for it -- and perhaps even be available against Senegal.

“In the end, the timelines dragged on a bit. It makes me a bit angry -- I’m not happy about it -- because we know Richards is an important player. We all know that.

“But regarding the information we were working with -- sometimes there’s a lack of clarity.”

That lack of clarity now threatens to bleed into his World Cup plans.

A brutal calculation ahead

The choice in front of Pochettino is stark. Wait for Richards and risk carrying a key defender who arrives undercooked, or move on and settle the back line without him.

Pochettino knows what that means at this level.

“We’d end up with a player who hasn’t been competing, and then we’d have to decide if he’s fit enough to play,” he warned. “There isn’t much time at the World Cup.”

The clock is ticking on Richards’ ankle, and on Pochettino’s patience. The next few days will decide whether the United States walk into their home World Cup with the center-back they planned for, or with a defense rebuilt on the fly.
