Chelsea's Manager Search: Iraola and Alonso Lead the Shortlist

Chelsea have begun making formal approaches to potential head coaches, accelerating their search for a permanent successor to Liam Rosenior as the club tries to lock in a new era before pre-season begins in early July.

This is no idle casting of the net. Names are already circling the Stamford Bridge boardroom: Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner sit prominently on the list, while former Chelsea favourites Filipe Luis and Cesc Fabregas have influential admirers inside the club.

The attraction is obvious. Iraola, Alonso, Silva and Glasner will all be out of work, or due to be free of their current commitments, by the end of the season. For Chelsea, that means one crucial thing in the current market: no compensation fees. A clean negotiation, at least on paper.

Glasner, who has impressed at Crystal Palace, will leave Selhurst Park when his contract expires this summer and is understood to be open to staying in England. His high-energy, front-foot football has not gone unnoticed in west London.

Iraola, meanwhile, has already confirmed he will depart Bournemouth at the end of the season. That decision has triggered a tug-of-war. Palace have identified the Spaniard as their first-choice replacement for Glasner and have already held extensive talks, laying out their vision and structure for him to inherit.

Yet the story is not straightforward. Iraola is in no rush. He is weighing up his future carefully amid interest from both Palace and Chelsea, fully aware that his reputation and style give him leverage at the top level. Sources indicate the 43-year-old is even open to starting next season without a club, keeping himself free to step into any mid-season vacancy that might arise at a major side.

Silva presents a different kind of puzzle. His Fulham contract runs out this summer, but the club have moved to keep him, putting a three-year deal on the table. He has not committed. The Portuguese coach is reported to have options abroad, while clubs in Saudi Arabia are also understood to be watching closely should he decide to walk away from Craven Cottage.

Alonso, hugely admired across Europe for his work and his clear tactical identity, remains a marquee name on Chelsea’s list, while the presence of Filipe Luis and Fabregas in internal conversations underlines the club’s willingness to consider younger, less conventional appointments with deep ties to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s hierarchy want clarity well before the first day of pre-season. The calls have started, the interviews are coming, and the shortlist is packed with contrasting profiles.

The question now is not whether Chelsea will land a big name. It is which vision of the future they are prepared to bet the club on.
