Barcelona Pursue Julián Álvarez as Top Striker Target
Barcelona back themselves. In a summer market full of noise, they are convinced the clearest signal belongs to Julián Álvarez – and that it points straight to Camp Nou.
The La Liga champions see the Argentine as the man to lead their attack into a new era after Robert Lewandowski’s move to Chicago Fire in MLS. Not one of several options. The option. Their No. 1 target for the centre-forward role.
Tonight, Álvarez steps onto the World Cup semi-final stage against Thomas Tuchel’s England, but his club future is already driving a different kind of tension in Spain and across Europe.
Barcelona hold their line
Barcelona have already tested Atlético Madrid’s resolve with an offer in the region of £85m earlier this summer. Atlético did not respond. No counter, no formal rejection. Just silence.
Inside Barça, that has not been taken as a defeat. Quite the opposite. The Catalan club still believe they are leading the race for the 26-year-old and are reading every sign from the player as encouragement.
A few weeks ago in the United States, Álvarez publicly admitted he wanted to leave the Spanish capital and urged Atlético to sit down and negotiate. Hansi Flick’s staff interpreted those words as a clear push towards Barcelona – and only Barcelona.
Crucially, Álvarez has so far refused to open talks with other clubs. That single stance, more than any number on a contract, fuels Barça’s confidence.
Arsenal and PSG wait in the shadows
The competition is real. Premier League champions Arsenal are tracking the situation closely, as are Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.
In Argentina, Clarin reports that Mikel Arteta’s side are “following every movement”, preparing to step in as a serious alternative if Barcelona cannot close a deal. PSG, never shy in a bidding war, are also in the frame.
Yet neither club has gone beyond Barça’s proposal. The understanding in Spain is that Arsenal’s offer sits below the £85m mark, while PSG would only reach that figure if Atlético accepted a package involving players as part of the deal.
For now, that leaves Barcelona with the highest straight bid – and, more importantly, with the player’s declared preference. Álvarez has made it clear he wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt next season. That desire, combined with the current state of the offers, keeps Barça in front.
New bid, ticking clock
Inside the Camp Nou offices, the response is already being prepared. Reports in Spain indicate Barcelona are working on a new and improved proposal to present to Atlético at the end of July.
The fixed fee is expected to remain close to the initial £85m, but the club plans to load the offer with performance-related variables to push the overall value higher. Those add-ons could prove decisive in tempting Atlético to the table.
Even so, Barcelona’s sporting department is realistic about the constraints. They know Arsenal and PSG have not yet beaten their bid, but they also know Atlético will not be bullied into a quick sale.
That is where Hansi Flick’s demands come in. The German coach wants any new first-team signing in the building and integrated before Barcelona’s La Liga campaign begins on 23 August. The improved offer will not sit on the table indefinitely. If there is no progress, Barça will pivot.
Player swap on the horizon?
To unlock the deal, Barcelona may have to do more than adjust the numbers. A player heading in the opposite direction is firmly on the agenda.
President Joan Laporta is expected to front the negotiations with Atlético, and the prospect of including a Barça player in the package is being seriously considered. With Atlético notoriously tough negotiators, that kind of makeweight could be the key to breaking the deadlock.
All the while, Álvarez keeps his distance. His camp insists he is fully focused on the World Cup with Argentina and will not make any final call on his club future until the tournament is over. That stance pushes the saga deeper into the summer.
Barcelona accept the story may run into August. What they will not accept is an open-ended chase. Inside the club there is a clear line: the situation cannot drag on much beyond the start of the month. If Atlético continue to stonewall, the plan changes.
Plan B already in motion
Behind the scenes, that plan is already taking shape. Sources close to the Barcelona hierarchy have told Spanish outlet AS that work is underway on an alternative forward signing.
The identity of this player remains tightly guarded, but the profile is not. This is no stopgap. The backup target is described as one of the leading forwards on the international stage, someone deemed capable of carrying the attack if the Álvarez move collapses.
That alone underlines how determined Barcelona are to leave this summer with a marquee striker, one way or another.
For now, though, all roads still lead back to Álvarez. The club believe the money is competitive, the timing manageable and, most importantly, the player’s will firmly aligned with theirs.
As he lines up for Argentina in a World Cup semi-final, the battle for his signature rages off the pitch. If Barcelona get their way, the next time he walks out to that kind of noise, it will be in the colours of La Blaugrana – and under the lights of Camp Nou.
