Atlético Madrid Responds to Barcelona's Julián Álvarez Rumors

Atlético Madrid have gone to war with Barcelona – and they’ve chosen sarcasm, social media and some pointed accusations as their weapons.

Convinced that Barcelona are fuelling stories about a looming bid for Julián Álvarez, Atlético have accused the Catalan club of orchestrating a “smear campaign” and spreading “fake news” around their star forward.

This is not a quiet, behind-the-scenes complaint. It’s loud, public and laced with mockery.

Barcelona’s move, Atlético’s message

Barcelona’s summer statement began on Friday with the £69m signing of Antony Gordon, a move that underlined their intent to refresh and upgrade their attack. Almost immediately, attention turned towards Álvarez, the 26-year-old Argentine who has hit 20 goals in 49 games in all competitions this season.

Reports of a big-money Barça move gathered pace. Numbers flew around. So did speculation.

Atlético’s response was blunt: Álvarez is not for sale. Internally, they value him at up to £130m, a figure designed to slam the door on opportunistic bids and send a clear signal to any suitors circling their No 9.

But they didn’t stop at a valuation.

Memes, mockery and sunflower seeds

As social media filled with talk of an “imminent” Barcelona offer, Atlético decided to turn the narrative on its head. On their own channels, they began posting parody transfer graphics, dropping Barcelona’s brightest talents into red-and-white shirts.

Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha – all mocked up as Atlético players.

The joke went further. Atlético attached spoof “offers” for each of them, including one particularly pointed package for Yamal: Bad Bunny concert tickets, an annual subscription and a bag of sunflower seeds. The tone was unmistakable – if these are the kinds of rumours being taken seriously, here’s how ridiculous it all looks from Madrid.

Under a picture of Raphinha in an Atlético shirt, the club delivered a sharp caption:

“Don’t believe everything you see, especially if it’s related to Barca.”

The memes landed, but they were only the prelude.

From jokes to accusations

Behind the humour sat a much angrier message. In another post, Atlético turned their fire directly on Barcelona’s hierarchy, and specifically on sporting director Deco.

“Finally, we want to take this opportunity to categorically deny that we have made an offer to the sporting director of FC Barcelona to join our scouting team in the Brazilian market,” the club wrote, a line dripping with irony.

Then came the punch.

“No, Atlético de Madrid would never do something like that. However, in recent months, we've been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players.

“Leaked information with ulterior motives, ‘fake news,’ constant disrespect, the culé version of the propaganda machine inventing little stories, calls before direct matchups.”

The language is unusually strong for an official club communication. Atlético are not simply dismissing transfer chatter; they are accusing Barcelona-linked voices of deliberately unsettling Álvarez and poisoning the atmosphere around direct clashes between the clubs.

Silence in Barcelona, tension in the market

Barcelona, approached for a response, declined to comment. The Spanish FA has also been contacted for its view but has yet to weigh in.

So, for now, the story sits on Atlético’s terms: a club feeling besieged, a fanbase rallied by defiance, and a striker publicly ring-fenced at a price that dares anyone to test it.

The transfer window opens on 15 June and runs until 1 September. Between those dates, phone calls will be made, intermediaries will push, and rumours will continue to swirl.

If Barcelona do decide to move from intrigue to action on Julián Álvarez, they now know exactly how hostile the ground will be.
