Arsenal Pursue Bruno Guimaraes Amid Rejection from Newcastle

Arsenal’s first move for Bruno Guimaraes has been swatted away, but the Premier League champions are not walking away from the table just yet.

The London club have stepped up a long-running pursuit of the Newcastle United midfielder, testing the waters with an opening proposal understood to be around £55 million. It was never likely to be enough. Newcastle’s response underlined that.

Arsenal test Newcastle’s resolve

Over the past 24 hours, Arsenal have shifted from admiration to action. Bruno Guimaraes has been on their radar for some time, and with Mikel Arteta hunting a new central midfielder and a left-sided attacker this summer, the Brazil international has moved to the top of the list.

Journalist Ben Jacobs reported that Arsenal initially made an “exploratory approach” to Guimaraes’ camp, mirroring contact Manchester United are also said to have made before the window opened. At that stage, there had been no direct talks with Newcastle, who, as Jacobs stressed, “do not wish to sell.”

That position has now been tested.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Arsenal followed up by going directly to both player side and club side. The idea was clear: explore a deal in the region of £55m. Newcastle’s stance was just as clear. They “closed the doors” on that figure and made it plain that Guimaraes will not leave for such a fee.

Brazilian outlet GeGlobo went further, describing Arsenal’s proposal as a formal £55m “offer” that has been rejected, with the expectation that the Gunners will return with an improved bid.

For now, Guimaraes is said to be leaving the situation in Newcastle’s hands and respecting the club’s position. The ball, then, sits squarely with Arsenal. Do they walk away, or push harder for one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders?

Champions chase youth in Jeremy Monga

While the Guimaraes saga brews, Arsenal are moving on a second front.

Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has emerged as another target, and Arsenal have already seen an initial “cheeky” offer turned down. The approach, though, has not dampened their belief that a deal can be done.

According to Football Insider, the two clubs are in active discussions, keen to strike an agreement without dragging the matter to a tribunal. That detail matters. It suggests both sides see value in resolving Monga’s future quickly and cleanly.

Crucially for Arsenal, the player is understood to be willing to make the move to the Premier League champions. That willingness tilts the negotiation. When a talented prospect wants the step up, the selling club’s leverage shifts, even if only slightly.

So Arsenal push on two fronts: a marquee midfield chase that will test Newcastle’s resolve and financial demands, and a youth move they are “confident” of finalising. One deal would reshape Arteta’s engine room immediately. The other might define it in the years to come.

How bold are the champions prepared to be to get both over the line?
