Ajax Signs Femke Liefting on Season-Long Loan from Chelsea

Ajax have moved to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks by bringing Femke Liefting back to the Azerion Vrouwen Eredivisie on a season-long loan from Chelsea for the 2026/27 campaign.

The deal, confirmed by the Dutch club on their official channels on Friday morning, offers the 21-year-old a return to familiar ground after an interrupted spell in England.

A career that accelerated quickly

Liefting’s rise has been sharp. She broke through at VV Alkmaar, then crossed to neighbours AZ in 2023, where her form between the posts quickly pushed her onto the radar of major European clubs. Chelsea, fresh from another Barclays Women’s Super League title, moved decisively and signed her in January 2025, betting on her long-term potential.

The move to London, though, has not yet turned into the on-field platform she needed. Foot and hip injuries stalled her progress and restricted her chances to build rhythm in a fiercely competitive Chelsea squad. A loan spell at Newcastle United last season finally gave her some much-needed minutes and a taste of English football outside the pressure cooker of a title-chasing side.

Ajax bet on potential and pedigree

Ajax now step in at a pivotal moment in her development. A Dutch youth international who already knows the tempo and demands of the Vrouwen Eredivisie, Liefting returns to a league where she has previously impressed and where her reputation was forged.

Technical manager Dolf Roks underlined exactly why Ajax have made their move. “Femke is a talented goalkeeper who has already proven her quality in the Vrouwen Eredivisie. She also gained valuable experience at the highest level during her time at Chelsea, where she continued to develop. We are delighted that she will add experience and quality to our squad for the coming season,” he said.

For Ajax, it is a low-risk, high-upside addition: a young goalkeeper with top-club training, domestic familiarity, and a point to prove.

A crucial season for player and parent club

For Liefting, the equation is simple. She needs games. Regular, competitive, high-stakes football. After 18 months in England marked more by rehab than by clean sheets, a full season as a leading option at Ajax could reset her trajectory.

Chelsea, who hold her contract until the summer of 2028, will watch closely. If Liefting can stay fit, re-establish her sharpness, and show the authority that first caught their eye, this loan could turn into the bridge between promising prospect and genuine contender for a long-term role at Stamford Bridge.

For now, though, the focus is Amsterdam. A returning Dutch talent, a club with ambitions at home and in Europe, and a season that may well decide what kind of goalkeeper Femke Liefting becomes.
