Tottenham Break Transfer Record Again with Sandro Tonali Deal
Tottenham have torn up their own transfer history for the second time this summer, landing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal worth up to £100 million ($133m).
Newcastle rejected an opening offer of £75m ($100m), but Spurs refused to walk away. Negotiations dragged on, the numbers climbed, and a second proposal finally hit the mark, sources told ESPN.
The agreement is a heavyweight package: an immediate £92.5m ($123m) fee, with a further £7.5m ($10m) in performance-related bonuses tied to European qualification. If those targets are met, Tonali will stand as one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history and the costliest in Tottenham’s.
And that is despite the fact Spurs had already broken their transfer record once this summer.
Midfield revolution in north London
Before Tonali, the headline arrival was Mateus Fernandes from West Ham in an £85m ($72m) move that reset the club’s spending ceiling. That record has now lasted only weeks.
Two huge deals. One clear message. Tottenham are rebuilding their midfield with intent.
Last season’s Premier League campaign left scars. A club that once chased Champions League places instead flirted with disaster, narrowly avoiding relegation after a turbulent year. The response has been emphatic: invest heavily, reshape the spine, and try to drag the team away from the bottom and back towards the top half of the table.
Tonali and Fernandes arrive as the centrepieces of that plan. Between them, they represent a dramatic shift in Tottenham’s transfer strategy, from cautious spending to aggressive, front-foot recruitment.
The price tags are enormous. The expectations will be just as big.
