Tottenham Secures £85m Signing of Mateus Fernandes

Tottenham have landed one of the headline deals of the summer, agreeing an £85m fee with West Ham for Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes after outmuscling Manchester United in a straight financial shootout.

No add-ons. No performance clauses. Just a guaranteed £85m that underlines how badly Spurs wanted him.

Spurs get their man

At 21, Fernandes has become the centrepiece of Tottenham’s midfield rebuild. Once their £80m offer for Sandro Tonali was knocked back by Newcastle, the focus snapped fully onto the West Ham man. Inside the club he was seen as a primary target, the one they were prepared to stretch for.

They did exactly that.

Manchester United were in the race, talking to his camp and to super-agent Jorge Mendes, who kept lines open to both clubs as Fernandes weighed up his options. But when it came to the fee, the paths split.

Tottenham pushed all the way to West Ham’s terms. United refused.

The north London club’s decisive move left United watching from the outside, unwilling to match the guaranteed £85m package Spurs were prepared to put on the table.

United stick to their line

At Old Trafford, the mood is very different. The message from the recruitment team is clear: they will only buy at what they believe is the right valuation, no matter how loud the noise around a player.

They admired Fernandes. They did the work on him. Yet internally, there was a feeling that the stance they took last season — holding their nerve and waiting for the right players at the right price — had been vindicated. That experience has hardened their resolve.

There were also doubts behind the scenes about how badly Fernandes wanted to wear United red. That question mark, combined with West Ham’s asking price, meant they never came close to Tottenham’s offer.

So while Spurs move aggressively, United move selectively.

Midfield remains the priority at Old Trafford

None of this changes United’s main objective: they still want a central midfielder.

A £35m deal with Atalanta for Ederson is already in place, though the timing has been complicated by his late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad. United will have to wait, but they expect him to come.

The calendar adds its own pressure. Pre-season starts on 9 July, yet Michael Carrick’s squad looks almost untouched from the end of last season. Apart from out-of-contract pair Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, there have been no major exits and no marquee arrivals through the door.

Plans have had to bend to circumstance as well. The intention to sell Manuel Ugarte has been put on ice after his serious injury with Uruguay at the World Cup. That closes off one route to reshaping the midfield and complicates the picture for the summer.

Up front, Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee remains at the club despite speculation about his future, while sources have moved quickly to knock down rumours of Mason Mount heading for the exit.

Tottenham, then, have made their statement with a single, huge cheque. United prefer to play the long game. By the end of the window, one of them will look vindicated.
