Tottenham Set to Sign Savinho from Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur are moving back into territory they know well: a big, bold swing for a winger they believe can change the rhythm of their attack. This time, they look set to land him.
Savinho, long admired in north London and once priced out of their reach, is now on the brink of a £65million move from Manchester City, with the Premier League champions already plotting his replacement.
A chase Spurs refused to drop
Tottenham first pushed hard for Savinho last summer, testing City’s resolve with an offer in the region of £60m. The answer was a firm no. Inside the Etihad, the plan was to keep the Brazilian and, if anything shifted, potentially move for another countryman: Real Madrid’s Rodrygo was explored as a possible successor.
Neither deal materialised. Savinho stayed, Rodrygo remained in Madrid, and the story seemed to fade.
The winger, though, had been keen on the Spurs switch. He believed he was being underused by Pep Guardiola and saw north London as a stage where he could become central rather than rotational. Even so, he signed a new six‑year contract at City, a deal that looked like the end of the saga.
It wasn’t. Tottenham quietly kept the line open. In recent months, that interest has roared back into life.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined where Spurs’ priorities lie this week, dismissing reports of a move for Napoli youngster Antonio Vergara and stressing that Savinho remains the club’s primary winger target.
“Vergara is not a target for Tottenham,” Romano said, explaining that the Napoli man is instead signing a new deal with a pay rise in Italy. The noise around Vergara, old and new, was brushed aside with one reminder: “Tottenham want to sign Savinho… The player they want for winger position is Savinho.”
City prepare for life after Savinho
As Spurs edge closer, Manchester City have started to act like a club ready to cash in.
According to the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones, City are now turning their attention to Paris Saint‑Germain prospect Ibrahim Mbaye as they prepare to close the sale of Savinho to Tottenham for around £65m.
“Manchester City, Aston Villa, Tottenham and RB Leipzig are among the clubs monitoring developments with Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye,” Jones reported, outlining a growing market for the 18‑year‑old.
Mbaye, who caught the eye with Senegal at the World Cup, is understood to be ready to leave PSG this summer. With competition increasing and minutes likely to shrink, he wants regular, meaningful football. His situation has now entered a different level of scrutiny, with Jorge Mendes taking over his representation.
City, Jones wrote, are actively seeking wingers as they move towards finalising Savinho’s departure and have looked beyond last year’s enquiry for Rodrygo at Real Madrid. Mbaye is one of several options, but his age, profile and availability make him a live candidate.
Spurs make their choice out wide
If Jones’ information holds, Tottenham have lifted their offer from last year’s £60m to around £65m, and that increase appears to have shifted City’s stance. The deal is described as close, and crucially, Savinho wants it. Personal terms are not expected to be a problem, which should help accelerate the process.
This isn’t a move made in isolation. Tottenham have scanned the winger market all summer.
Cody Gakpo’s name has been on the list, but Liverpool have now drawn a line through that possibility. The Anfield club decided on Wednesday that Gakpo will not be sold in this window as they aim to strengthen their wide options, not weaken them.
Rafael Leao has been another high-profile option. On July 5, it emerged that the AC Milan star had given the green light to a potential move to Spurs in a deal worth around €50m (£42m). A player of his stature effectively saying “yes” would usually trigger a full‑scale push.
Yet Tottenham appear ready to walk away from that path and commit to Savinho instead. It is a clear statement of preference: a younger Brazilian winger, already familiar with the demands and tempo of English football, over a marquee Serie A star at a lower fee.
For Spurs, it is a bet on profile, potential and fit. For City, it is a chance to refresh their wide options with a rising talent like Mbaye while banking a sizeable fee.
If the final details fall into place as expected, Savinho’s next step will not be about escaping the shadows at the Etihad. It will be about whether he can handle the spotlight in north London and become the winger Tottenham have been chasing for more than a year.
