Tchouameni Commits to Real Madrid Until 2031
Aurélien Tchouameni has made his choice. With one decision, he has silenced the transfer noise and tied his future to Real Madrid deep into the next decade.
According to RMC Sport, the France international has reached a full agreement to extend his contract at the Bernabéu until June 2031, a move that slams the door on a serious push from Manchester United, who were ready to test Madrid’s resolve with an offer in excess of €100 million.
For United, it is a brutal reality check. For Madrid, it is a statement.
Mourinho’s arrival changes everything
Tchouameni, now 26, had become the subject of growing speculation in recent months. Madrid’s erratic domestic form had raised questions over the direction of the project, while reports of an internal rift with Federico Valverde added another layer of uncertainty around his future.
Then came José Mourinho.
Marca reports that the new head coach played a decisive role in turning the situation. The Portuguese, handed full authority over upcoming squad decisions, made it clear he saw Tchouameni not as a tradable asset, but as a cornerstone. An anchor around which his midfield would be built.
That clarity mattered. Tchouameni, who already felt valued as a vital part of Madrid’s long-term plans, now had the backing of a manager whose reputation is built on winning and on ruthlessly shaping squads to his will. The message from Mourinho and the hierarchy aligned: this is not a player to cash in on, this is a player to build around.
The result is a long-term deal that stretches to 2031 and effectively ends any realistic hope of prising him away in the near future.
United miss again in the market
For United, this is another painful entry on an increasingly familiar list. Tchouameni had been identified as a primary target, the kind of commanding midfielder to transform the spine of the team. The club were prepared to go beyond €100m to get him.
They never got close.
The failure, sources suggest, is not just about Madrid’s refusal to sell. It is about timing and hesitation at Old Trafford. United’s hierarchy has already taken criticism for dragging its feet over financial packages and structures in recent windows, and the pattern has repeated.
After losing out to Tottenham Hotspur for Mateus Fernandes due to disagreements over performance-related bonuses, United now find themselves empty-handed again at the top end of the market. Madrid chose certainty and continuity, and United are once more forced to pivot.
Attention now turns to Andrey Santos, who is set to arrive from Chelsea. A talented option, yes, but clearly not the original headline act they had in mind.
Madrid keep their anchor, France get their enforcer back
While the contractual details are being finalised in Madrid, Tchouameni’s immediate focus lies thousands of miles away, in international colours.
His short-term horizon is the World Cup with France.
Having shaken off a muscle injury that ruled him out of the round-of-16 tie against Paraguay, the midfielder has returned to full training in Bentley ahead of a crucial knockout clash with Morocco. His return is perfectly timed for Didier Deschamps, who knows exactly what Tchouameni brings when the stakes rise: control, physical presence, and the ability to close down space in the most demanding battles.
France face a gruelling, physical test in the latter stages of the tournament. Deschamps now has his midfield enforcer back, and Madrid know that the player they have just locked down until 2031 will be sharpened on the biggest stage of all.
United will watch on from afar, wondering how many more times they can afford to see their top targets slip away, while Madrid move forward with a man they clearly believe will define their midfield for years to come.
