Rangers Sign Dan Neil: A New Chapter for the Sunderland Captain

Rangers have won the race for Dan Neil, prising the Sunderland captain away on a free and dropping a clear marker down for the new season.

The 24-year-old midfielder has signed a three-year deal at Ibrox, turning his back on a move to Southampton after Rangers stepped in late with a superior offer to bring him to Glasgow. For a player who has spent his entire career living with the demands of a one-club city, the fit is obvious.

From South Shields to Ibrox

Neil is not a journeyman pick-up. He is a product of Sunderland’s Academy of Light, a local boy who walked through the doors as a nine-year-old in 2010 and ended up wearing the armband at Wembley.

He made his senior debut at 16 in 2018 and never really looked back. Across League One and the Championship, he became a constant presence in midfield as Sunderland clawed their way back up the ladder. By the time his contract expired this summer, he had amassed 201 appearances and 12 goals for the Black Cats, along with an EFL Trophy win in 2021.

The high point came in 2024/25. Neil captained Sunderland through the Championship play-offs and into the Premier League, leading Régis Le Bris’ side to a dramatic 2-1 win over Sheffield United in the final at Wembley. He played 47 league games that season, scoring twice and driving a club that had been marooned outside the top flight for eight years back to where it believes it belongs.

Those are not the numbers of a squad filler. They are the numbers of a midfielder who knows how to shoulder responsibility.

A captain’s mentality

Neil’s own words tell you why Rangers pushed so hard.

“It is a new chapter for myself, and I am really excited to be signing for Rangers. I’m really looking forward to what the next few years can bring,” he said after the deal was confirmed.

He talked about the “weight and expectation” at Sunderland, about how results “make or break” weekends and how that pressure drives him. People he trusts have told him the feeling in Glasgow is the same. That is exactly what he wants: a club where 110 per cent is the minimum, not a slogan.

This is a player drawn to intensity, not daunted by it.

McInnes’ midfield piece

Derek McInnes has been busy reshaping his squad. Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey and Ivor Pandur have already come through the door. Neil becomes signing number five, and arguably the clearest expression yet of the manager’s blueprint.

“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Dan to the club. He will be an excellent addition to our squad,” McInnes said. “He is a technically gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team.

“At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Dan throughout pre-season as we prepare for the challenges ahead.”

That blend is what stands out: still young, but hardened by pressure games, promotion pushes and the unforgiving grind of the English lower leagues.

A late twist in the market

For a spell, it looked as if Neil would be heading south again. Reports suggested Southampton were closing in, a logical move for a player already embedded in English football and fresh from a loan spell at Ipswich Town, where he made 16 Championship appearances as the Tractor Boys surged to promotion.

Then Rangers moved. A better offer on the table, a clearer role, the lure of Ibrox and the Old Firm glare. The deal swung north at the last moment.

From Rangers’ perspective, it is a statement not just of ambition but of agility in the market. From Neil’s, it is a calculated leap into a different kind of pressure cooker.

He knows what awaits: a fanbase that demands victories, a club that measures itself in trophies and European nights, not just steady progress. That is precisely what has pulled him away from Wearside.

He has already captained one giant back to the top flight. Now he walks into another club that expects to live at the summit. How quickly can he bend Ibrox to his rhythm?
