Newcastle United have drawn a firm line under Aaron Ramsdale’s brief Tyneside chapter and moved the search for a new No1 to the top of their summer agenda.

Eddie Howe has decided against making Ramsdale’s season-long loan from Southampton permanent, despite the England international racking up 23 appearances in black and white. Those months were effectively an extended audition for a place in Newcastle’s rebuild. He hasn’t convinced.

The club’s recruitment team are already working through a shortlist that underlines the scale of the reset. Brighton’s highly rated Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, Manchester City’s James Trafford and Stade de Reims’ Ewen Jaouen have all emerged as targets, with Newcastle intent on finding a long-term solution rather than a stop-gap.

For Ramsdale, it closes another chapter in a stop-start period of his career. For Howe, it’s a clear signal: the next phase of Newcastle’s project starts with a new man between the posts.
