Jose Mourinho Demands Two More Signings for Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s summer rebuild is already in full swing, but Jose Mourinho is not easing off. Four deals are done, more are lined up, and the head coach is still demanding fresh blood before the window closes.
Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva have all agreed to join the Spanish giants. They will walk through the doors of the Santiago Bernabeu later in the summer, once their commitments at the 2026 World Cup are over. By then, if Mourinho gets his way, they will not be arriving alone.
According to reports in Spain, the Portuguese coach has gone back to the club hierarchy with a clear message: this squad needs at least two more signings. Not luxury additions. Core pieces.
A spine still under construction
Mourinho’s request is precise. He wants another centre-back to partner or rotate with Konate, and a midfielder in the mould of Luka Modric – someone who can dictate tempo, knit play together and handle the weight of the Bernabeu on the ball.
He has not left the club guessing. As with Konate, Dumfries, Cucurella and Silva, Mourinho has driven the process and submitted a short list of preferred names.
At the back, he has identified Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck as the two options he trusts. Both are left-footed defenders comfortable stepping out with the ball, both capable of anchoring a high defensive line and coping with the tactical demands that come with a Mourinho team at Real Madrid.
The debate inside the club, though, is not settled. Schlotterbeck has been heavily discussed in recent weeks and repeatedly linked with a move, yet his recent injury lay-off – ruled out for six to eight weeks – threatens to derail any immediate transfer. A defender signed to stabilise the back line cannot arrive with medical doubts attached, and that reality may tilt the scales towards Bastoni.
The search for a Modric heir
In midfield, the profile is even more delicate. Mourinho wants a Modric-esque figure, a player who can bridge eras and carry the rhythm of matches as the Croatian once did at his peak.
His preferred names are Enzo Fernandez and Mateus Fernandes. Both fit the broad idea: technical, progressive, able to operate in tight spaces and influence possession from deep.
Within the club, Enzo Fernandez currently appears to be the favoured candidate. The Chelsea midfielder has the experience of elite competition and the all-round game to step into one of the most demanding roles in European football. Yet a deal is not close. There is no sign of an imminent agreement, no suggestion that Real Madrid are on the verge of prising him away.
Mateus Fernandes remains on the list, a potential alternative if negotiations for Enzo stall or the financial equation becomes too heavy. For now, though, he sits behind the Chelsea man in Mourinho’s internal hierarchy.
Mourinho refuses to settle
What is clear is that Mourinho is not treating this as a gentle refresh. He has already played a decisive role in bringing Konate, Dumfries, Cucurella and Silva to the club and expects to be equally influential in the next phase of business. This is his project as much as it is the board’s.
Real Madrid have moved early and aggressively, yet inside the Bernabeu there is an acceptance that the job is not finished. The back line still needs another cornerstone. The midfield still lacks the long-term orchestrator who can take the baton from Modric’s generation.
The market will decide how many of Mourinho’s demands can be met. He has asked for two more signings. He may get one. He may get both.
What he will not do is lower the bar.
