Maxi Araujo Transfer Battle: Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal Join the Race
Manchester United and Chelsea have dived into the race to sign Sporting CP’s marauding left-back Maxi Araujo, joining Arsenal in what is fast becoming one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer battles.
The 26-year-old has exploded onto the European radar over the past year. A key pillar of Ruben Amorim’s Sporting side in 2025/26, Araujo delivered seven goals and six assists in all competitions, numbers that would stand out for a winger, never mind a defender. He can hug the touchline as a traditional full-back or push higher as a wing-back, and he carries the kind of end product top clubs now demand from their wide defenders.
Right now, he is doing it on the biggest stage as well. Araujo has been one of the few bright spots in a disappointing Uruguay campaign at the World Cup, already contributing two goals and an assist. His country, coached by Marcelo Bielsa, are staring at the prospect of an early exit if they lose to Spain and results elsewhere in Group H go against them, but Araujo’s stock is rising regardless.
Clubs are paying attention.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, Manchester United have stepped up their interest, sending representatives to watch Araujo during Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde last Sunday. Scouts didn’t just see a willing runner; they saw a defender happy to take responsibility in the final third, prepared to carry the ball and commit opponents even under tournament pressure.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are circling as they reshape their left flank. With Marc Cucurella sold to Real Madrid in a £52 million deal earlier this month, the London club are in the market for a like-for-like replacement who can offer energy, aggression and quality on the ball. Araujo ticks every box on that profile.
Arsenal’s head start under threat
Arsenal, though, were there first. Reports in April suggested the Premier League champions had already made initial contact over a move to the Emirates. Mikel Arteta’s admiration stems from first-hand experience: Araujo impressed him across Sporting’s two Champions League quarter-final ties against Arsenal, showing he could handle elite opposition and still drive his team forward.
Since then, Arsenal have completed a permanent deal for Piero Hincapie, which complicates the picture on the left side of their defence. It does not erase their interest, but it gives United and Chelsea a window to move.
Sporting, for their part, hold the strongest hand at the negotiating table. Araujo’s contract runs for another three years and contains an €80m (£69.3m) release clause. The Lisbon club are under no pressure to sell cheaply and know full well that a bidding war between three Premier League heavyweights can only push the price in one direction.
The player himself is keeping the door open without forcing it. Speaking after Uruguay’s frustrating draw with Cape Verde, Araujo struck a careful balance between loyalty and ambition.
“I’m very happy at Sporting, but you never know what’s going to happen,” he said, leaving every suitor listening between the lines.
He also made a point of praising teammate Ivan Fresneda, who travelled to watch him in Miami. “I was happy to be able to talk to Fresneda, I’m grateful that he’s here and I love playing with him. I hope we can play together for a long time.”
That last line will have soothed Sporting supporters, but it won’t scare off the Premier League. Not when a modern, goalscoring full-back in his prime is lighting up a World Cup and sitting on a contract with a clear price tag.
The question now is simple: who blinks first – the club that admired him early, or the giants who have just joined the chase?
