Manchester United Target Tchouameni as Real Madrid Opens Sale Door

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild may yet revolve around one of Europe’s most coveted anchors, with fresh indications that Aurelien Tchouameni could be prised away from Real Madrid this summer.

Michael Carrick, having steered United to a top-three finish last season, knows exactly where his squad still creaks. Casemiro has gone, and with him the safety blanket at the base of midfield. The plan is clear: Ederson is due to arrive from Atalanta, pending a new medical, but Carrick wants more than just numbers. He wants a new reference point in the centre of the pitch.

Tchouameni has long been viewed at Old Trafford as the dream signing for that role. Now the dream has a hint of realism.

Madrid ready to listen – if Tchouameni wants out

Spanish outlet Bernabeu Digital report that Real Madrid are prepared to sell Tchouameni this summer if two conditions are met: the fee is right, and the player himself is willing to move on.

Madrid’s own midfield plans are shifting. Enzo Fernandez, heavily linked earlier in the window, is no longer on their agenda. Instead, the European champions are said to be fixated on Manchester City and Spain lynchpin Rodri, who is putting together another outstanding World Cup campaign.

Rodri’s situation adds intrigue. The 30-year-old is into the final year of his contract at City, and the Premier League champions have just committed £116 million to bring in Elliot Anderson, giving them fresh cover in that holding role. It leaves the door slightly ajar for Madrid, who, under José Mourinho’s watch, are intent on reinforcing the base of their midfield regardless of what happens with Tchouameni.

The report suggests the decision on his future will largely rest with the Frenchman. Madrid will go after a top-class holding midfielder either way; Tchouameni must choose whether he wants to stay and fight or seek a new stage.

United are watching that decision closely. Several reports indicate the club view Tchouameni as their ideal solution and are ready to move quickly if Real Madrid give the slightest encouragement.

Ferdinand: United must be “first at the door”

Inside Old Trafford, Tchouameni has admirers at every level, but few have been as vocal as Rio Ferdinand.

The former United defender has been championing the Frenchman since his Monaco days. Speaking in 2022, Ferdinand said: “Listen, Tchouameni is a young kid, he’s going to make mistakes but he’s a superb talent, he produces moments out of nowhere, incredible player. Replacing Pogba in a France XI is not an easy task, but so far, Tchouaméni has been superb. Tchouameni showed why he plays for Real Madrid. He has the patience, talent, control, he has everything you need.”

That admiration has only hardened into a transfer plea. Looking ahead to this summer, Ferdinand urged his former club to act without hesitation: “Do you know what? I know I've been sitting here saying that Jose is going to be the man to reintegrate Tchouameni and Valverde together and keep them at Real Madrid.

“But I've got to say, if Tchouameni has a half a sniff of getting out of that club, Man Utd have to be the first team at the door knocking and make sure he can't even talk to anybody else. Get him signed, sealed, delivered.”

For United, the equation is stark. Carrick wants a commanding presence to anchor his evolving side. Real Madrid are open to talks if their man wavers. A club legend is demanding decisive action.

If Tchouameni so much as cracks that door open, United’s next move will say plenty about how serious they are about turning last season’s momentum into something far more enduring.
