Manchester United Target Ismaila Sarr as Key Forward

Manchester United have fixed their gaze on one of Crystal Palace’s crown jewels – and it will take serious money to prise him away.

Ismaila Sarr, fresh from the finest season of his career and a standout World Cup in North America, has emerged as a leading attacking target at Old Trafford as INEOS search for a versatile forward to reshape Erik ten Hag’s front line.

United turn up the heat on Sarr

United went into this window with a clear brief: find an attacker who can play across the frontline, stretch defences from wide areas and still carry a genuine goal threat through the middle. Inside the club, Sarr is viewed as ticking every box.

TEAMtalk understands United have now made contact with the Senegal international’s representatives to formally register their interest and to dig deeper into his situation at Selhurst Park. Sarr had been on United’s radar before the World Cup, but his performances in North America have hardened that admiration into intent.

He left the tournament on a sour note on Wednesday, as Senegal somehow let a 2-0 lead slip against Belgium in the final five minutes. Yet Sarr’s stock only rose. Four goals, one assist, and a series of performances that underlined his ability to operate as a central striker as well as from the flanks.

That last detail matters. It is precisely that flexibility which has pushed INEOS to elevate him from a name on a list to a genuine target.

Palace’s Conference League hero

If the World Cup showcased Sarr to the globe, his club season did the groundwork.

The 28-year-old played a central role in Crystal Palace’s historic UEFA Conference League triumph, finishing the competition with nine goals and being voted Player of the Season. On the domestic front he was just as influential, hitting nine Premier League goals to end the campaign with 20 in all competitions.

For a player who cost Palace less than £15 million when he arrived in 2024, it has been a spectacular return on investment. It has also transformed their bargaining position.

With three years left on his contract and a new manager in Pierre Sage who will be in no rush to lose his star forward, Palace are expected to demand a fee that more than triples their original outlay. Any club wanting Sarr will have to pay a “Conference League hero” premium.

United know this will not be a straightforward deal.

Zirkzee exit, Rashford uncertainty sharpen the need

The pursuit of Sarr comes against a backdrop of flux in United’s attacking department.

At least two new midfielders remain the club’s priority this summer, but there is a clear and ongoing commitment to bring in a forward who can cover multiple attacking roles. That plan has only sharpened with Joshua Zirkzee expected to move on and Marcus Rashford’s future still unresolved.

As revealed earlier this week, United are braced for an “in-between” scenario with Rashford: if a permanent transfer cannot be agreed, a return to Old Trafford remains on the table, even though the club’s preference is still to secure his departure. The uncertainty only increases the need for a reliable, flexible attacker who can slot in across the front line.

Sarr fits that brief more neatly than most. While he has largely operated from wide areas at Palace, his World Cup displays through the middle for Senegal revealed another layer to his game and reinforced the idea that he could rotate between roles without disrupting the system.

Summerville watched, Sarr rises up the list

United are not short of options. West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville has also been closely monitored in recent weeks following his own impressive World Cup campaign, as reported by Fraser Fletcher on June 17.

The Dutchman remains on the list. But the sense now is that Sarr has nudged ahead.

His blend of European pedigree, international form and Premier League output gives him a profile that is hard to ignore. He is not a project signing. He is ready-made.

United, though, are not the only heavyweight circling.

Juventus lurking, Ratcliffe watching the numbers

Italian giants Juventus are also tracking Sarr after following his progress throughout last season. Their interest adds another layer of complication to any negotiations with Palace, who are under no pressure to sell and know they hold a valuable asset in a market short of top-level, multi-functional forwards.

Whether Palace are prepared to listen to offers this summer is still unclear. Sage, newly installed and buoyed by a European trophy, would have every reason to insist his key man stays, especially after such a commanding year for club and country.

Then there is the Old Trafford balance sheet.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear he wants a tighter grip on transfer fees and wages. That stance has already had consequences: United ultimately missed out on Mateus Fernandes, with fresh details emerging over what they put on the table and why the deal slipped away.

So the equation is stark. A club determined to be more disciplined in the market. A player whose value has rocketed in 12 months. A selling club with time, leverage and no need to compromise.

If United want Ismaila Sarr to spearhead the next phase of their rebuild, they may have to decide just how much this new era of restraint can bend for a forward who looks built for the stage they still aspire to dominate.
