Manchester United Pursues João Fernandes and Ederson in Midfield Revamp
Manchester United are preparing to step up their interest in West Ham’s João Fernandes, with the club’s relegation opening a window the Old Trafford hierarchy are keen to exploit.
United plan to make contact with West Ham in the coming days to formalise their intent, with the 21-year-old one of three midfielders they want to bring in during this transfer window. Inside the club, Fernandes has moved from a name on the long list to a serious target.
United believe the Portugal youth international will be available this summer and are working to understand the financial framework of a deal. Their internal valuation sits around £50 million, and they want clarity on whether West Ham are prepared to negotiate within that range or attempt to stretch the market.
West Ham, for their part, are not expected to roll over. Figures close to the London club anticipate a push to draw more suitors into the race and ignite a bidding war, driving the price north. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have already been credibly linked, and West Ham are likely to lean on that interest as leverage.
United know the game. They also know their own limits.
Ederson deal sets the tone
The move for Fernandes comes as United edge towards what they hope will be an early breakthrough: a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
Talks over the Brazilian have progressed to the point where an early-summer agreement is now considered increasingly likely. A fee below £35 million has been viewed as realistic, and United see that as the benchmark for the type of value they want to hit repeatedly in this window.
That stance is not just a slogan. It is already shaping the rest of their midfield strategy.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba remains a player admired at Old Trafford, but United’s refusal to overpay could yet kill that pursuit. Brighton’s valuation, understood to be around £100 million, has shown little sign of softening. With the window drawing closer, there is a growing feeling that United may simply turn their attention to more attainable targets rather than wait for a price drop that may never come.
Alternative midfield options on the radar
The recruitment team at Carrington have not limited themselves to one or two names. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni are all on the list of players admired by United’s decision-makers.
None of those names are straightforward.
Any move for Scott would hinge on Bournemouth’s willingness to cash in on one of their most promising assets. Tonali’s situation is complicated by his ban and Newcastle’s own squad plans, while Tchouaméni remains a key figure at Real Madrid, meaning price and availability will dictate whether any of those options move beyond admiration.
For now, Fernandes and Ederson look like the most realistic pillars of a rebuilt United midfield, with the club intent on adding legs, aggression and technical security without blowing up their budget.
Rashford’s future stalls wide-forward plans
While the midfield picture sharpens, the attack remains blurred.
United had been exploring the market for a left-sided forward, but those plans may be put on ice while Marcus Rashford’s future hangs in the balance. The 26-year-old’s situation is far from settled, and United are wary of committing major funds in that area before they know whether he stays or goes.
Rashford is understood to still hold hope of a permanent move to Barcelona. The Catalan club retain an interest, but any serious progress depends on the financial mechanics of a deal, particularly with Anthony Gordon’s pending move to Barca leaving the wider picture uncertain.
United’s summer, then, is being shaped by a clear internal mantra: strengthen heavily, spend smart, and refuse to be dragged into the kind of inflated deals that have defined too many recent windows. Whether that resolve holds when the bidding wars begin will define not just their midfield – but the direction of the next phase at Old Trafford.
