Manchester United Pursue Ederson from Atalanta for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s summer plans are starting to take shape, and they begin not with a galáctico, but with a grafter.

Club officials are working on a deal to bring Ederson from Atalanta, with talks progressing over what is expected to be his exit from Bergamo. The Brazilian has 12 months left on his contract and, according to reports, is set to leave Serie A in the coming weeks.

This is not the kind of name that sends social media into meltdown. It is, however, exactly the sort of move that hints at a clear idea from the new football structure at Old Trafford. Jason Wilcox is understood to be a firm admirer, and United’s persistence underlines that.

Ederson lined up as first piece of the puzzle

Manchester Evening News report that United are pushing to make Ederson their first signing of the summer transfer window, with negotiations with Atalanta moving in the right direction.

At 26, he offers something United’s midfield has sorely lacked: relentless running and real physical presence over 90 minutes. Comfortable as a deep-lying midfielder or as a No. 8, he has built a reputation in Italy for his engine and aggression, the kind of player who covers ground without complaint and drags a team up the pitch through sheer work rate.

Those close to the talks describe Ederson as “definitely of interest” and suggest he could become Michael Carrick’s first signing if discussions continue to advance. The profile fits: a functional, tactically disciplined midfielder to underpin a broader rebuild, rather than the headline act in it.

United, though, are not stopping at one.

The plan is to bring in at least two midfielders this summer. Ederson’s potential arrival is viewed as complementary, not as the marquee solution. Inside the club, there is a clear understanding that Casemiro must be replaced at the very top level, and that will require serious spending.

As the report puts it, United chiefs have earmarked significant investment to secure a long-term successor to the Brazilian.

Marquee target still on the agenda

The search for that statement signing has taken United’s recruitment team across a familiar landscape of names and price tags.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is currently believed to sit at the top of United’s midfield shortlist. He offers Premier League experience and age on his side, but there is a complication: Manchester City are also in the race. United have no intention of being dragged into a bidding war with their neighbours, and any move will be carefully weighed against the rest of their summer budget.

At the very top of the dream list sits Aurélien Tchouaméni. The Real Madrid midfielder is viewed at Old Trafford as an ideal, long-term anchor for the centre of the pitch, the kind of signing that could define a new era.

The problem is obvious. Real Madrid have shown no willingness to even entertain the idea of his departure. Until that stance softens, if it ever does, Tchouaméni will remain more fantasy than live option.

United are also keeping an eye on Mateus Fernandes. With West Ham dropping into the Championship, prising the Portuguese midfielder away is expected to be far more straightforward from a negotiating standpoint. He represents another opportunity to add legs and technical security without consuming the entire budget.

So the picture becomes clearer. Ederson as the worker. A marquee name as the pillar. A supporting cast built around them.

For the first time in a while, United’s midfield rebuild looks less like a scattergun scramble and more like a deliberate, layered plan. Now the question is simple: can they land the players to match the ambition they have finally put on paper?
