Manchester United Target Alex Scott for £80m Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has a new leading man: Alex Scott.

The Bournemouth playmaker has moved to the top of United’s shortlist for the summer window, with club reporter Samuel Luckhurst revealing that the Old Trafford hierarchy have not ruled out a bid despite an £80 million price tag.

United have been circling around several midfield options, but the picture has sharpened in recent weeks. Elliot Anderson has gone. Mateus Fernandes has gone. Scott, once one name among many, is now the preferred target.

United stay in the race

United have held talks over a possible move for the 20-year-old and remain in the conversation, even as Bournemouth dig in.

The Cherries want to keep him. They are pushing to extend his contract and, according to Luckhurst, any new deal would almost certainly include a release clause. That would protect Bournemouth’s position and set a clear price for any future sale.

For now, though, the valuation is already clear enough: £80m. A huge figure for a player still in the early stages of his Premier League career, but one who has quickly grown into one of the division’s standout young midfielders since arriving on the south coast.

His form has not gone unnoticed. Several clubs are tracking him. United are one of them, and crucially, they have not yet walked away.

A delicate balancing act at Old Trafford

United’s recruitment team are trying to tread a fine line this summer. They want to be smarter, leaner, more disciplined in the market. They have already refused to match the money Tottenham and Manchester City were prepared to pay for Fernandes and Anderson.

That restraint makes sense on paper. United cannot keep inflating fees for the sake of it. But there is a cost to caution as well, and they are feeling it now. Targets are slipping away. Options are narrowing.

At some point, they have to commit.

The club’s priority is clear: at least one midfielder must arrive before the window closes. The squad needs fresh legs and fresh ideas in the middle of the pitch. That need is not going away, no matter how carefully the budget is managed.

Time to “bite the bullet”?

This is where Scott comes in. Young, Premier League-proven, technically gifted, and already trusted to run games for Bournemouth, he fits the profile United want to build around.

The question is whether he is the player they finally “push the button” on.

United are still in the race. They have not formally ended their interest, despite the price. Bournemouth, for their part, are doing everything they can to secure their asset and control his future.

One club wants to be clever. The other wants to be stubborn. Somewhere between those positions lies the deal.

United cannot afford another miss in a window that was supposed to reshape their midfield. The next move, whether it’s for Scott or someone else, will say a lot about how serious they really are.
