Manchester United Abandons €45m Éderson Transfer Deal

Manchester United have walked away from a €45 million move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson, abandoning what had been billed as their first major signing of the summer over medical concerns.

The deal was so advanced it was effectively being spoken about in the past tense. Paperwork between the clubs had been completed, personal terms agreed since May, and Fabrizio Romano had already stamped it as “100% confirmed” at the start of June. Éderson was expected to sign later in the summer, the move framed as a key piece in United’s attempt to build on a resurgent second half of the season under Michael Carrick, which ended with a third-place finish and Champions League qualification.

Then the brakes went on. Hard.

Romano revealed on X that the transfer is now off, describing it as “collapsed” after United informed Atalanta of their decision to change course. The Premier League club’s concerns centre on the Brazilian’s fitness, a red flag serious enough to overturn weeks of progress and a fully agreed package.

Atalanta, for their part, are standing firm. They are convinced Éderson is fully fit and ready to resume his role in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad, and will now welcome him back into the group ahead of the new campaign. From being on the verge of a flagship move to Old Trafford, the 24-year-old instead returns to Bergamo with his future abruptly reset.

The collapse comes after Éderson himself had spoken at the World Cup about how close the move was, while still trying to keep his focus on international duty.

“I have to wait. Now I have to enjoy this moment, then we will see,” he told reporters. “Certainly, everything is almost done, but now I have to enjoy this moment. This is a wonderful experience and you have to enjoy the most.”

United’s interest had looked like smart business in a market where top midfielders command extraordinary fees. Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro was among those who felt the Premier League side were poised to land value as well as quality.

“I think Éderson as well, £38 million I believe,” he told BritishGambler.co.uk last month. “When you think, Man Utd are linked with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Tchouameni from Real Madrid, they’re all obviously world-class players, but they are so expensive comparatively.

“I think £38 million for Éderson is a bit of a bargain, really, in today’s market, right?”

Sandro, who knows the demands of English football first-hand, had no doubts about the Atalanta man’s profile.

“I know that he’s a top midfielder. He went to Brazil a few times with the national team. I saw a couple of videos, whilst I didn’t follow him game by game, I know that he’s strong. He has that physical ability to play in the Premier League and I know that a few other clubs wanted to sign him from the Premier League as well.”

For United, Champions League qualification had injected fresh money and renewed allure into their summer plans. Éderson was supposed to be the first piece, a dynamic presence to reinforce a midfield aiming to compete with Europe’s elite again.

Instead, the club head back into the market with a gap still to fill, a medical file that has clearly spooked them, and a reminder that even “100% confirmed” deals can unravel in an instant.
